Although it was a bit blustery, we enjoyed our first visit to Holyrood Palace and Abbey. The audio tour guide was easy to use and quite informative. One of the indoor highlights of the tour was the room with the purported blood stain marking Rizzio's place of death near Mary Queen of Scots bedchamber. Ah, intrigue! The grounds next the Palace and the Abbey ruins were a delight to walk through with the presence of early spring flowers. Overall, the Holyrood Palace self-guided tour was an informative and pleasing way to spend part of our day visiting Edinburgh.

We really enjoyed our visit with my daughters and friends, comparing the present with the past and what we know about Mary, Queen of Scots. The sweet endings was the green garden and authentic coffee in the courtyard.

Choosing the right Hop-on Hop-off pass for your Edinburgh trip

With multiple operators offering similar Hop-on Hop-off tours in Edinburgh, choosing the right one can shape how smoothly your trip unfolds. Here’s a quick breakdown of what to consider so you can pick the pass that best matches your travel style and priorities.

  • Route coverage & reach: If you want to go beyond the Old Town, Big Bus and Edinburgh Bus Tours are better picks with routes extending to Leith and the waterfront. City Sightseeing sticks to a single central loop, making it ideal for covering core landmarks quickly but with more limited reach.
  • Depth of experience (live vs. audio): For richer storytelling, Edinburgh Bus Tours stands out with a live English-speaking guide on the Green route. If you’re happy with flexible, self-paced listening, Big Bus and City Sightseeing offer solid multilingual audio guides with engaging commentary.
  • Simple vs. multi-route flexibility: Prefer something straightforward? City Sightseeing’s single-route pass keeps things easy. Want more variety and the option to explore different parts of the city? Big Bus (2 routes) and Edinburgh Bus Tours (3 routes) offer better flexibility and coverage.
  • Family-friendly features: Travelling with kids? City Sightseeing is a great choice thanks to its ‘Horrible Histories’ commentary, designed to keep younger travellers engaged while sightseeing. Other operators are informative, but more geared toward general audiences.
  • Extra perks & value adds: Edinburgh Bus Tours offers added value with attraction discounts and a live-guided route, making it a strong pick if you want more than just transport. Big Bus adds convenience with a mobile app and live tracking for easier planning on the go.
  • Pacing & time management: If you’re short on time, City Sightseeing is the quickest option with buses every 10 minutes on a single central route. For a more varied experience, Edinburgh Bus Tours offers three routes and a live-guided option, while Big Bus balances coverage with steady service across two routes.

Finding the perfect Hop-on Hop-off pass duration

Choosing the right pass duration can shape how comfortably you explore Edinburgh. Since most operators offer 24 and 48-hour options, your decision comes down to how much time you have and how deeply you want to explore beyond the city center.

  • 24-hour pass: Ideal for short stays or quick city overviews. You can cover key highlights like Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, and central landmarks in one day. This option works best if you’re following a tight itinerary or visiting Edinburgh as part of a larger trip. Available across Big Bus, City Sightseeing, and Edinburgh Bus Tours.
  • 48-hour pass: Perfect for a more relaxed, in-depth experience. With two days, you can explore multiple routes, spend more time at attractions, and venture beyond the Old Town to areas like Leith. It’s also a better value if you plan to hop on and off frequently. Offered by Big Bus and Edinburgh Bus Tours, making it ideal for travellers who want extended coverage and flexibility.

Tips to make the most of your Hop-on Hop-off Edinburgh tour

  • Start smart: Begin with a full loop before hopping off so you understand route coverage and can plan your stops better. This helps avoid backtracking, especially if you’re using a 24-hour pass.
  • Pick the right pass: Choose your operator based on what you want to see. If Leith or the Royal Yacht Britannia is on your list, go for a multi-route ticket instead of a single-route option.
  • Plan for frequency: Check bus timings in advance, as some routes run less often. Blue routes, in particular, have longer wait times, so time your stops accordingly.
  • Book ahead: Reserve entry tickets for major attractions like Edinburgh Castle in advance to avoid long queues cutting into your sightseeing time.
  • Explore locally: Take breaks at local cafés and pubs around Grassmarket or Victoria Street to experience Edinburgh beyond the main attractions.
