Guinness storehouse visit was great. I was disappointed with the hop on hop off bus because we were asked to get off before our scheduled stop at Train mitt College. The bus driver said that he couldn't continue with the rest the of the route and we would have wait a half hour or more for the next bus. This was at about 4pm which was well before the last bus scheduled for 6pm.

Choosing the right Hop-on Hop-off pass for your Dublin trip

Selecting the right Dublin Hop-on Hop-off operator can be the difference between a generic tour and an immersive Irish adventure. With multiple green and red buses circling the city, this guide breaks down key parameters, from local expertise to unique themed additions, to help you choose the service that best aligns with your Dublin itinerary.

  • Local expertise & authenticity: DoDublin is the top choice for travellers seeking an authentic vibe. As the city’s original operator since 1988, their drivers are famous for the ‘gift of the gab’, providing live commentary filled with local jokes and songs. Every ticket also includes free entry to The Little Museum of Dublin, making it the best value for culture seekers.
  • Themed & after-hours tours: If you want to explore Dublin’s darker side, DoDublin dominates with the iconic Ghostbus Tour, a professional theatre-on-wheels experience. Meanwhile, Big Bus offers a dedicated Panoramic Night Tour, perfect for those who want to see landmarks like the Samuel Beckett Bridge and the Grand Canal Dock beautifully illuminated without the daytime crowds.
  • Maximised sightseeing combos: For those looking to hit the big hitters, Big Bus and City Sightseeing offer seamless bundles. You can pair your bus pass with Guinness Storehouse entry or a Liffey River cruise to save on individual admissions. These combos are ideal for those who prioritise convenience and want their logistics handled in a single booking.
  • Global standard & flexibility: City Sightseeing and Big Bus provide the most consistency for international travellers, offering high-frequency service and digital audio guides in multiple languages. This is a significant factor if you prefer a self-paced tour with precise historical narration in your native tongue.
  • Unique transit connections: For cruise passengers docking at the port near Dún Laoghaire, the DoDublin Hop-on Hop-off Tour with Round-trip Train Transfer is the premier choice for a seamless day trip. This specialised pass includes a direct DART rail connection from the harbour area to the heart of the city, allowing you to bypass port traffic and begin your sightseeing adventure immediately upon arrival.

Finding the perfect Hop-on Hop-off pass duration

Choosing the perfect Dublin Hop-on Hop-off pass duration depends on whether you’re here for a quick pint or a deep dive into Irish history. Dublin is compact, but its wealth of museums and distilleries means your time can disappear quickly.

  • 24-hour pass: Ideal for day-trippers or cruise passengers who want a high-level overview of the city’s ‘Big Three’: Trinity College, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and the Guinness Storehouse. This pass allows you to skip the city’s confusing one-way systems and head straight to the landmarks. All major operators, including DoDublin, Big Bus, and City Sightseeing, offer 24-hour options.
  • 48-hour pass: This is the most popular choice for a classic weekend break. It provides enough breathing room to spend a full morning at the Kilmainham Gaol or enjoy a guided Liffey River cruise without feeling rushed. Operators like Big Bus often include extra perks for this duration, such as a panoramic night tour and guided walking tour, while City Sightseeing includes entry to the Irish Whiskey Museum or World of Illusion.
  • 72-hour pass: Best for the ‘slow traveller’ who wants to explore beyond the city centre at a relaxed pace. With three full days, you can use the Big Bus pass or City Sightseeing tickets to visit iconic landmarks or take advantage of the extended duration to explore the furthest reaches of the Red Route. It is the most economical choice for those planning an immersive stay, as the daily cost is significantly lower than a single-day ticket. Both Big Bus and City Sightseeing offer 72-hour validity, making them the top options for long-stay visitors.

Tips to make the most of your Dublin Hop-on Hop-off tour

  • Orient yourself first: Start your day by completing one full circuit to get your bearings; it is the best way to visualise the city's layout and decide which landmarks you want to explore in depth.
  • Bundle for better value: Maximise your savings by booking a combo ticket that pairs your bus tour with top-tier attractions like the Guinness Storehouse or a Liffey River cruise to avoid multiple booking fees.
  • Use real-time tracking: Download the operator's mobile app to access real-time bus tracking and live arrival times, which helps you minimise wait times at stops and manage your sightseeing schedule more efficiently.
  • Pre-book major attractions: Plan your visit to popular sites like Kilmainham Gaol or the Book of Kells well in advance, as these high-demand spots often require pre-booked time slots that sell out weeks ahead.
  • Dress for the Irish weather: Carry a lightweight, waterproof jacket regardless of the forecast; Dublin’s weather is famously ‘four seasons in one day’, and you’ll want to stay dry while enjoying the open-top views.
  • Sample local delicacies: Take a break at a traditional pub in the Liberties or near Smithfield to try a ‘coddle’, a classic Dublin stew, or enjoy a fresh scone with tea for an authentic culinary treat.
  • Shop for unique souvenirs: Look for unique souvenirs at the Temple Bar Night Market or George's Street Arcade, where local artisans sell everything from vintage vinyl to handcrafted Celtic jewellery and contemporary Irish art.

Frequently asked questions about Dublin Hop-on Hop-off tours

How frequent are the buses, and what are the operating hours?

Buses generally run every 15 to 30 minutes for DoDublin and Big Bus, while City Sightseeing operates every 30 to 60 minutes. Most tours start around 9am and conclude their final loops by 5pm daily.

What should I do if I miss the last bus?

If you miss the final loop of the day, you will need to find alternative transport, like a taxi or public Dublin Bus, to return to your destination. Your pass will still be valid for its remaining duration the following morning.

Can I board the hop-on hop-off Dublin tour at any stop?

Yes, you can get on and off the tour at any of the stops along your selected route.

Which stop is the best place to start my tour?

While you can join at any stop, most travellers begin at O’Connell Street or near the Irish Whiskey Museum on College Green. These central hubs offer easy access to all routes and ticket redemption points.

Do children need a ticket for the bus tour?

Most operators do not charge a fee for very young children who don’t need their separate seats. But if you do need to buy a ticket for young children or teenagers, you won’t have to pay full price as most operators offer discounted prices. Check the details on the check-out page before booking tickets for your kids.

Are the Dublin Hop-on Hop-off buses wheelchair accessible?

Yes, the vast majority of buses across all three operators are equipped with low-floor access and dedicated wheelchair spaces. However, it is always recommended to check specific tour details for any temporary vehicle substitutions.

Can I bring luggage or strollers on the bus?

Small strollers are permitted but must be folded if the bus is crowded. Large luggage is generally discouraged due to limited storage space, so it is best to leave heavy bags at your hotel or a city locker.

Are pets allowed on the Dublin bus tours?
