I loved it all apart from the fact that the bus didn't turn up at the railway station although it was according to the automated sign supposed to (we waited but it didn't come) so we walked but we were so pleased that the last one turned up that all is forgiven and next time it will turn up and an awesome will be awarded. Thank you

Tannoy descriptions of historical matters although only in English was interesting and with odd joke thrown in was very informative. Drivers very helpful. Worth money . Will use again .

Loved the tour. Good commentary, and very pleasant driver. Buses were on-time. Only suggestion would be better signposting when coming out of Chester Railway Station (there is a guide to the various bus-stops, but it's quite small, and there is no 'red' sign on the bus-stop.

    Grosvenor Street

Grosvenor Street is Chester's main shopping boulevard, lined with elegant Georgian-era facades, upscale boutiques, and cozy cafés, perfect for both window-shopping and a proper retail spree. You’ll spot the Grosvenor Museum tucked away here, featuring Roman tombstones and local art, making your coffee stop feel unexpectedly cultural. At the southern end, you’ll come across St. Francis’ Church, a beautiful red sandstone parish with lovely stained glass.

    St John’s Church

Perched outside the city walls on the north bank of the River Dee, St John’s is Chester’s original cathedral, dating back to the 7th to 11th centuries. It’s one of the best examples of Norman architecture in Cheshire, with stunning arches, ancient remnants, and an interior brimming with history.

    Handbridge

Cross the Dee via the Grosvenor Bridge and you'll land in Handbridge, a charming district full of leafy parks, vibrant riverside pubs, and Georgian terraces. It's a quieter, local-heavy corner of Chester, ideal for a lazy afternoon wandering or a riverside pint. Handbridge was once a bustling Roman river port; so when you see those old stone houses and the gentle curve of the river, know that you’re tracing pathways used for commerce nearly two millennia ago.

    The Groves

This delightful walkway along the River Dee is a Chester favorite for daydreamy strolls. Grab an ice cream from a nearby shop, settle on the lawn, and watch swans glide by. In summer, you might catch a paddle steamer cruising the river.

    Pepper Street

Just a short hop from the city walls, Pepper Street is known for its boutiques, galleries, and brunch spots. On weekends, locals gather here to linger over coffee, explore independent shops, or catch a pop-up street performance. It’s a buzzing creative hub where the old town meets new ideas.

    City Walls & Grosvenor Bridge

Chester’s iconic city walls are the best preserved Roman and medieval ramparts in Britain. They loop the entire city and offer stunning elevated views over rooftops, the cathedral, and the river. For a special moment, cross the Grosvenor Bridge, which was once the world’s longest single-span stone arch. When walking this route, you’ll feel the layers of history beneath your feet, a path once trodden by Roman soldiers and Victorian engineers.

    Chester Roman Amphitheatre

Just off St John's, this amphitheatre is a hidden gem of Roman entertainment, once seating up to 7,000 people for gladiatorial fights and displays. Today, it’s a grassy, atmospheric ruin where you can almost hear echoes of ancient crowds. It’s one of the largest archaeological sites in Chester, and you can wander around, imagining the roar of the audience below.

    Chester Cathedral

This magnificent Gothic structure evolved from an 11th-century abbey. With soaring towers, carved choir stalls, and radiant stained-glass windows, it's a feast for the senses. You can even climb the tower for a bird's-eye view of the city.

Tips to make the best of your Hop-on Hop-off Chester tour

    • Want to experience the magical whimsy of the River Dee? Hop on a boat ride and glide downstream.
    • To immerse yourself in the city’s history, join a walking tour that will take you through the city’s Roman origins, places of Victorian innovation, and more!
    • For the freshest and most sumptuous meals, visit local farm markets, festivals, and breweries, where you get a taste of authentic Cheshire flavors.
    • Visit The Cheese Shop on Northgate Street to sample some of the finest cheeses in the district.
    • Uncover Chester’s storybook world with a spring visit, when River Dee rushes rapidly, the flowers are in full bloom, and local music & food festivals spring up around town.
