It was a comprehensive tour along the north route on the island of Malta. I wasn't sure whether to do it or not, but it was 100% worth it. Get ready for a long trip (over 3 hours and à half, without hopping off...). I would recommend to do the first 2-3 days upon arrival to have a good overview.

The Polish ersion of the audio guide is unfortunately unprofessional. Both the text and the narrator who reads the text, who is confused every now and then. In addition, the text is often read at the wrong time - it tells about something we can't see at the time... Unfortunately, the buses were not always on schedule due to traffic jams. I missed information about the real time of arrival of the bus at the stops - maybe it would be possible to do this in the app? It would make planning a tour easier for tourists.

The Explanations were very rare and we had often half an hour with just nothing. Often we did not know in which village or City we were. No explanations. Twice that the honey came from a special bee from the Island. We had better Tour with Sight Seeing that you offer in other countries. Sorry. This was just a waste of time.

First of all, the paper bus timetable we received from the driver had incorrect bus stop times, the correct times were listed online. One of the drivers was 20 minutes late arriving. On the way back to the original bus stop, we had to almost beg the driver to take us back to where he picked us up at the beginning, with very unclear communication from him.

Lovely staff, good itinerary and all on time However, it was very disappointing that we only got told we needed to exchange our mobile QR code 'ticket' for a physical ticket once we had purchased the tour. As we were staying in an independent apartment 1.5 hours away from Valletta and had no printing facilities, we had to get a service bus to Valletta and start the tour from there. This should have been made very clear from the start. Not everyone stays in a hotel or nearby the ticket validation points

A convenient way of seeing some of the famous sights and being able to get off and see Mdina. The problem is that there are no timetables at the stops and the drivers are not very friendly.

Bus was fairly punctual. Driver negotiated the narrow streets very well. Gozo is a beautiful island and there is much to see. The ten minute stop at the Shrine is a good idea - just long enough to get off and take a few photos. Maybe this could be done in other places, too.

The buses are easy to find and stop very close to the sites to be visited. There are lovely views of the countryside and villages. The driver was also good at advising travellers on whether or not they had time to do the tour, so as to be back in time for the ferry. On both itineraries, having taken the 1st bus of the day, we were only able to visit Dwejra, Marsalforn, Ramla and Victoria due to lack of time, so you have to choose carefully what you really want to see. As for the audio commentaries, I can't judge as the system didn't work at our seat. We just enjoyed it with our eyes! A good experience.

The Explanations were very rare and we had often half an hour with just nothing. Often we did not know in which village or City we were. No explanations. Twice that the honey came from a special bee from the Island. We had better Tour with Sight Seeing that you offer in other countries. Sorry. This was just a waste of time.

Being provided with both headphones and a map of the route when we got on would have been ideal. We were on the North Route. We were almost at St Anton Gardens before we got headphones! At Mdina we moved upstairs, as it was too hot downstairs - only to be seated where the audio didn't work. It was Golden Bay before we had a seat upstairs and where the audio worked. Poor frecuency of the buses and schedules where never right

What is a Hop-on Hop-off tour?

A Hop-on Hop-off tour offers a flexible and hassle-free way to explore a city, perfect for travelers looking to visit major attractions at their own pace. These buses operate on a fixed route with multiple stops at iconic landmarks and neighborhoods, allowing passengers to hop off to explore something they are interested in and hop back on the next bus when they are ready to continue. Tickets are usually valid for 24 hours or longer, offering plenty of time to take in the sights. Many of these tours also include either live commentaries or multilingual audio guides.

Why choose a Hop-on Hop-off tour of Malta

Golden sand beach with clear blue waters and sunbathers in Malta.

Explore two islands, your way

Whether you plan on soaking up the golden-hued Mediterranean beaches in Malta or traveling along one of the world’s biggest diving locations, Gozo, these Hop-on Hop-off tours let you create your own itinerary. Their flexible schedules, numerous buses, and stops at all the must-see spots ensure you don’t miss anything in Malta or Gozo.

View of the streets of Valletta during HOHO tour of malta

Big names and hidden gems

The name Malta comes from the Phoenician word maleth, meaning "safe haven"—and it truly lives up to its name! This tiny island is known for its 365 churches and seven stunning sea caves like the Blue Grotto. Don’t miss the ancient temples of Ggantija, golden-hour photo ops in Valletta, or a moment of serene stillness at Mosta Church.

Tourists using an audio guide on an open-top bus tour in Valletta, Malta.

Storytime on the go

Travel isn’t just about sightseeing; it’s also about sharing stories. With audio guides available in 13+ languages, including English, German, Italian, and Spanish, you’ll hear fascinating nuggets of information about the two cities. Bonus: free WiFi onboard so you can share these stories (and photos) with friends as you go.

Aerial view of Valletta, malta

Perfect for any schedule

Short on time? Get the 1-day pass and see all the highlights. Staying a little longer? Opt for the 48-hour pass to get into the nitty-gritty. Why not upgrade your ticket with a harbor cruise and explore Malta's Game of Thrones filming locations? Much of the first season was shot here, and Malta even served as the capital of the Seven Kingdoms!

Hop-on Hop-off buses are a great choice for:

Children on a bus tour in Malta

Families with kids

If you traveling with your little ones, you need to sign up for a Hop-on Hop-off bus tour. These buses eliminate the inconvenience of walking long distances or navigating public transport with strollers. Most of the tours include many family-friendly stops like museums, parks, and attractions that your kids will enjoy.

Travelers on a budget

Exploring cities on your own can get expensive, but Hop-on Hop-off buses offer great value for the price. While these tours typically don’t include attraction tickets, you get access to a fixed route that covers all of the must-sees in a city, guides (live and audio), and citywide transportation for at least 24 hours.

Malta Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour

Eco-conscious travelers

Hop-on Hop-off buses are a great way to go green without missing out on the intricacies of the city if you care about traveling responsibly. Instead of booking multiple taxis or renting a car, you can rely on a short, well-planned route that reduces emissions and keeps your carbon footprint in check.

solo traveler on HOHO bus in malta

Solo travelers

Traveling solo? Hop-on Hop-off buses are kind of like having a travel buddy. They are safe, convenient, and flexible, and come with live and audio guides to keep you company and share some of the city’s stories with you. You just need to hop on, hop off, and explore as you please!

Exploring Malta with City Sightseeing bus tours

Malta is truly an underrated treasure trove of history, shaped by centuries of Roman, Greek, Arab, Norman, and British influences. Yet, it rarely gets the recognition it deserves as a top travel destination. City Sightseeing makes exploring effortless with two Hop-on Hop-off bus tours across the islands of Malta and Gozo. Ever seen temples older than Stonehenge or the Pyramids of Giza? You will at Hagar Qim! These tours have it all, from historical landmarks and breathtaking coastal views to the UNESCO-recognized capital city of Valletta.

Finding the perfect Hop-on Hop-off pass duration:

  • 1-day pass: Ideal to cover essentials at your own pace. With the 1-day, City Sightseeing offers both Malta and Gozo Hop-on Hop-off tours. In Malta, you’ll have access to two routes and 38 stops, while Gozo offers 15 stops across two scenic routes. We recommend doing one route in Malta and both Gozo routes if you can – it’ll give a great balance of both islands. Along the way, take a quick stop at a local supermarket for some traditional Maltese snacks, like Galletti (crispy crackers), Ġbejna (Maltese cheeselets), and Bigilla (a rich bean dip). Don’t forget a refreshing local drink like Kinnie (a citrusy soft drink) or a bottle of wine made with indigenous grape varieties, Gellewża (red) or Girgentina (white).
  • 2-day pass: Double the time, double the fun! If you’ve got a bit more time, the 2-day pass gives you extra flexibility. You’ll still have access to the two routes and 38 stops in Malta, but with more time to dive deeper. A must-do addition to this pass is the optional Harbor Cruise, which is for about two hours, ideally in the late afternoon, to catch the golden hour sunset over the beautiful Maltese coastline. Do a full loop of both routes so you can pick out what locations you would like to visit again the next day!

Tips to make the best of your Malta Hop-on Hop-off tour

  • When exploring Malta, dress as comfortably as possible. Wear light, breathable clothing, especially in the summer, as the island can get quite hot. However, it can be chilly in the winter and at night, so carry a light jacket with you.
  • Pastizzi is a must-try Maltese snack – a flaky, golden pastry filled with ricotta cheese and mushy peas. Don’t let your only experience of it be from a cafe. For the real deal, head to a pastizzeria early in the morning for the freshest, crispiest treats.
  • While there are taxis available for personal commutes, be cautious of white taxis – they are often priced higher for tourists.
  • Gozo's coastal views and forts make it perfect for daytime explorations, but it lacks nightlife options. Save your evenings for Malta’s vibrant night scenes, especially in areas like St. Julian’s or Valletta.
  • Do not forget to bring your sunscreen if you are opting for the Harbor Cruise. Apply it regularly at two-hour intervals, as the Maltese sun can be quite intense.
