Why choose day trips to Sintra?

Sintra is one of the most sought-after destinations in Portugal, with several attractions such as the Pena Palace, Moorish Castle, and the Quinta da Regaleira. While you can explore them individually, the best and most convenient option is to cover all of them in a single day trip. Since all day trips start from Lisbon, you can easily cover Sintra in half a day to a full day, along with several other attractions and landmarks around it, including Cabo da Roca, Cascais, and even Nazaré and Fátima.

Top destinations on your Sintra day trips

Attractions you’ll see on your day trip to Sintra

Castelo dos Mouros a hilltop medieval castle located in Portugal
Belem Tower in Lisbon with nearby waterfront restaurants and scenic views.

Tips to enhance your Sintra day trips

  • Arrive on time: Each tour is carefully curated to allow for ample time at each landmark or attraction. Arriving at the meeting point on time is crucial to ensuring the tour is seamless and doesn’t have to be cut short due to a delay.
  • Visit during the low-season: Visiting Sintra during the low season is the best way to enjoy a laid-back trip, fewer crowds, and great weather. Bike, rickshaw, and private taxi drivers are also less likely to hassle you.
  • Explore Sintra via a bus: The 434 bus is the most convenient way to go from Sintra Station to Sintra Village, the Moorish Castle, and the Pena Palace, especially since driving around Sintra can be challenging.
  • Grab lunch at Bacalhau na Vila: Loved by most tourists who visit Sintra, this restaurant offers several dishes centered around cod, one of the healthiest white fish and a staple among those living around the North Atlantic.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: All the day trips involve a lot of walking and exploration, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes.
  • Avoid carrying prohibited items: Landmarks like the Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira don’t allow the use of a flash, tripods, and selfie sticks. If your tour includes these attractions, avoid carrying such prohibited items.
  • Carry enough cash: You’ll get the chance to shop and dine during your tour, which sometimes may also include tastings of local delicacies. Make sure you carry enough cash to make the most of these experiences.
  • Keep yourself hydrated: Sintra and its nearby cities can be fairly hot during the peak season, so you must carry plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated.

The itinerary and schedule were followed to the letter. The guide, the driver, and the organizers were all really great. That said, personally, I’d add more time at Cabo da Roca so I could grab a coffee, use the restroom, and enjoy the views... Everything was fantastic!

Pedro was our guide and he was terrific. We had trouble with traffic and he kept us informed throughout. Phillip was our bus driver and he was great also. So glad we went on the tour and didn't try and do this journey on our own.

Buying tickets ahead of time was the best thing we could've done! We skipped the queue for tickets and headed straight into the castle, which was excellent. The castle itself was amazing, we had so much fun. Between the views and the peacocks we had a great time. I would suggest that everyone visits the castle if they're in Lisbon. We spent around 1hr 30 here and had a good look around and explored.

The guide was very helpful and knowledgeable with information on the castle including the surrounding regional history, which incorporated the earthquake and tsunami. She adapted her talk to our group and answered all questions we had. Most helpful was her re-scheduling our time slot as we were running late. Have already recommended it to friends who have asked about my trip.

There were no lines at the first entrance, but then there were only lines at the Pena Palace, which made the visit unpleasant, despite the monument’s beauty.

A great stay, great attractions. The place is beautiful. However, you need to remember to arrange your transportation, or you'll have to do a little trekking from town. I recommend it!

Very informative, good group, great sights! Would've loved to spend more time in Cascais, guide had recommended a restaurant, unfortunately that took our entire time allotted there. Otherwise a very fun trip!
