Buying tickets ahead of time was the best thing we could've done! We skipped the queue for tickets and headed straight into the castle, which was excellent. The castle itself was amazing, we had so much fun. Between the views and the peacocks we had a great time. I would suggest that everyone visits the castle if they're in Lisbon. We spent around 1hr 30 here and had a good look around and explored.

The guide was very helpful and knowledgeable with information on the castle including the surrounding regional history, which incorporated the earthquake and tsunami. She adapted her talk to our group and answered all questions we had. Most helpful was her re-scheduling our time slot as we were running late. Have already recommended it to friends who have asked about my trip.

We have visited many aquariums around the world. And this one in Lisbon surprised and delighted us. It has an unusual format, where the aquarium itself is located as if on an island surrounded by water. Inside, everything is built in a circle, so you walk along a huge glass aquarium and at times find yourself in different corners of the planet - Asia, Africa, America, etc. At times, it feels like you are under the open sky. And it is really impressive. We also discovered new species of fish that we had never seen before. And a huge plus - there are areas for relaxation and entertainment for children everywhere. The cost is absolutely reasonable, we recommend a visit!

São Jorge Castle visitor tips

  • Summers in Lisbon are scorching we recommend wearing a hat and going with a bottle of water in case you need to wait in the queue
  • Head to the Camera Obscura in the Tower of Ulysses for a real-time, 360° view of Lisbon.
  • The castle grounds include cobblestones, uneven steps, and sloping paths, so sturdy, comfortable footwear is a must. Your feet will thank you after climbing the towers and walking the medieval walls.
  • Don’t be surprised if you hear a loud call—the castle’s resident peacocks love to strut their stuff through the gardens. They’re beautiful, playful, and perfect for a fun photo op (from a respectful distance, of course!).
  • If you’re planning to visit other top sights like the Belém Tower or Jerónimos Monastery, look into combo tickets or the Lisbon Card, which can save you time and money.
  • While the castle is stunning year-round, clear days offer the best views. If you're in Lisbon for a few days, try visiting when the weather’s looking bright.
