Who knew that the tough stone and bronze could spark the very delicate emotions, just through the way they were molded? Well, at the Rodin Museum, sculptures transcend their inanimate form, becoming living testaments to love, loss, desire, and the raw intensity of existence– and it's the genius of French sculptor Auguste Rodin who is to be lauded for the magic! From the tormented figures of The Gates of Hell to the serene beauty of The Thinker, Rodin’s works are a masterclass in capturing the essence of the human spirit.

Opened in 1919, the museum has housed thousands of sculptures, drawings, photographs, and art objects by Rodin, with even a room dedicated to his protege Camille Claudel. Read on to know everything about planning your visit to this attraction, the ticket information and more!

  • You can upgrade your tickets and get a 1 hour open dated Seine River cruise ticket with an audio guide which you can use any day of the month from the date of your purchase.
  • If you’re an art aficionado and a fan of Rodin’s work, going for a guided tour is an excellent choice. Led by an accredited art historian, the 2 hour long guided tour will help you get a deeper understanding of the style of the artist by going through the permanent exhibitions in a small group of up to 6 people for a more interactive experience. These tickets come with skip-the-line entry to the museum. However, access to the temporary or special exhibitions are not included in this tour.

Sculpture garden
Hotel Biron
  • Sculpture garden: What’s better than admiring beautiful artwork inspired by nature, amidst lush nature? The Rodin Museum's sculpture garden is an oasis where art and nature intertwine, as Rodin’s iconic sculptures, like The Thinker and The Gates of Hell are displayed in the thick of flourishing greenery. From the vibrant hues of roses in winter to the cheerful yellows of forsythia in spring, the garden has colorful blooms adorning the landscape throughout the year.
  • Hotel Biron: An elegant 18th-century mansion that serves as the permanent home to Rodin’s works, the Hotel Biron has, within its walls, eighteen rooms that showcase an array of the sculptor's creations, including clay sketches, plaster casts, and finished pieces in bronze and marble. You can trace Rodin's artistic revolution through his early career works on display, many of which solidified his reputation as the first of the ‘moderns’.

What to see at the museum

Paintings

Did you know that the Rodin Museum offers an opportunity to admire the works of two artistic giants, Monet and Van Gogh, side by side? Monet’s Belle-Île found a permanent home in Rodin’s private collection as a token of their friendship, exchanged in 1888. Moreover, Rodin acquired Van Gogh's Pere Tanguy in 1894, and their shared love for Japanese art could be the reason for the possession.

Drawings

Auguste Rodin's drawings are an exploration of the human form, particularly the female figure in dynamic, often extreme poses. His models, drawn from the world of dance, music hall, and circus, are rendered in soft, watercolor tones. This collection offers a glimpse into Rodin's artistic process, including works like Battle between a man and a reptile and Two semi-reclining female nudes.

Antiques

Rodin's personal art collection, assembled through purchases from art dealers, serves as a window into his artistic mind. While some pieces reminded Rodin of renowned artworks, others left a lasting impression on him. Among the intriguing objects in this private treasury are the enigmatic Headless Figure of Hercules, the Statue of King Ptolemy III Euergetes I, and the evocative Fragment of a Stela depicting a family group with a seated woman.

Sculptures

Rodin's art is a blend of soft focus, sensuality, raw human emotion, imitation and innovative techniques like assemblage, cutting-out, and pasting. Masterpieces such as The Thinker, The Kiss, The Gates of Hell, The Tower of Work, The Walking Man, The Age of Bronze, Hylas and the Nymphs, and Adam embody these themes, contributing to the Rodin Museum’s rich and varied collection.

Photographs

Rather than relying solely on his own eyes, Rodin turned to photography as a critical tool in evaluating his sculptures, which allowed him to fine-tune his work– he made changes to his work Young Girl embraced by a Marble Ghost based on a photograph by Eugène Druet! The collection also has photographs of his sculptures captured by other renowned artists like Edward Steichen's The Awakening, Charles Michelez's St John the Baptist, Man with a Broken Nose, and Bust of Bellone, and Cesar's portrait of Camille Claudel.

Having visited Paris several times over the years, I decided to take the family along. Knowing the queues for the museum we booked the fast track (timed) tickets and on arrival were thankful for doing so. The (normal) queue was several hundred metres in length. Whilst the fast track did not give you immediate entry, it was well worth paying the extra. We waited approximately 15 minutes. The museum itself was simply stunning and was able to enthuse our two boys also. On reflection I would probably start on the top floor (5th I believe) and work our way down. I have always been a fan of Impressionism and seeing the actual pieces of artwork that I have had hanging at home gave me goose bumps. Give yourself a minimum of two hours for the visit but realistically 3 hours would be best.

It's great, the only thing is that you have to remember to pick up the physical museum pass in advance, because otherwise you won't be able to enter the venues. Other than that, no problem.
