Holyroodhouse Palace | Official residence of the monarch in Scotland

The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the King’s official residence in Scotland, tucked at the end of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. Once home to Mary, Queen of Scots, it features 16th-century royal apartments, 12th-century abbey ruins, and rooms still used for royal ceremonies—all open to the public, unless royalty’s in town.

Why visit the Palace of Holyroodhouse?

Palace of Holyroodhouse
  • Royal residence: It’s the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland, still used by King Charles III for state ceremonies and official events when he’s in Edinburgh.
  • Historic interiors: Check out the rooms filled with ornate plaster ceilings, original 17th-century furniture, priceless paintings and centuries-old tapestries from France and Flanders.
  • Ancient abbey: Wander through the haunting ruins of Holyrood Abbey, founded in 1128 by David I. It once held royal weddings, coronations, and burials right next to the palace itself.
  • A leafy escape: Take a breather in four hectares of landscaped gardens with views toward Holyrood Park. These royal grounds even feature rare trees like the legendary Wentworth Elm!
  • Intersection of art & history: Eighty-nine portraits line this Great Gallery, showing off Scottish monarchs from ancient legends to actual kings. It’s the palace’s largest room and is packed with art commissioned by Charles II.

Although it was a bit blustery, we enjoyed our first visit to Holyrood Palace and Abbey. The audio tour guide was easy to use and quite informative. One of the indoor highlights of the tour was the room with the purported blood stain marking Rizzio's place of death near Mary Queen of Scots bedchamber. Ah, intrigue! The grounds next the Palace and the Abbey ruins were a delight to walk through with the presence of early spring flowers. Overall, the Holyrood Palace self-guided tour was an informative and pleasing way to spend part of our day visiting Edinburgh.

We really enjoyed our visit with my daughters and friends, comparing the present with the past and what we know about Mary, Queen of Scots. The sweet endings was the green garden and authentic coffee in the courtyard.

My highlight was walking up the steep, narrow, back stairs to Mary's bedchamber. I could feel the isolation she must have felt and fear of the future.
