Edinburgh ghost tours | Historical ghostly storytelling

Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, is well-known for its beautiful architecture and rich history. But do you know about the city’s ghostly past? If not, then plan a visit with Edinburgh ghost tours and learn about the sordid and grim past of the Scottish capital.

Why go on Edinburgh ghost tours

edinburgh ghost tours
  • Historical significance: Hidden beneath the beauty and old-world charm of Edinburgh is a past that is steeped in drama, intrigue, and ghosts. Ghosts, like David Rizzio, Mary Queen of Scots’ advisor, are an integral part of Edinburgh’s history, and the Edinburgh ghost tours take you on a spine-chilling tour of the city’s underbelly.
  • Storytelling: The charm of Edinburgh ghost tours lies in its storytelling. Unlike other guided tour experiences, your professional guide will spin and weave spooky stories about Edinburgh as they take you to some of the most ghostly locations in the city.
  • Cultural experience: Immerse yourself in Scottish culture as you embark on Edinburgh ghost tours that are filled with locations like the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle and stories about some of Edinburgh’s most infamous ghosts.
  • Optional drinks: Take your Edinburgh ghost tour experience a notch higher by opting for tickets that include a glass of whisky. Scottish whiskey and eerie ghost stories, nothing can beat this combination!

Things to know before booking Edinburgh ghost tours

  • Book in advance: Edinburgh ghost tours are one of the most popular experiences in the city. It’s a good idea to book your tickets online and in advance to benefit from significant time and cost savings. Since all ghost tours are small groups, tickets are limited so we recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment.
  • Types of tickets: To explore the Blair Street Underground Vaults, book the Historic Underground Vaults Walking Tour, the Ghostly Underground Walking Tour, or the after-dark, adults-only Hidden & Haunted Walking Tour. Book the Underground Whisky Tour and Tasting or the Evening of Ghosts and Ghouls Walking Tour with a glass of whisky if you’re interested Edinburgh’s ghostly whisky legacy and would like to sample a popular Edinburgh whisky. To explore the Royal Mile, go on the Secrets of Edinburgh's Royal Mile Walking Tour with optional entry to Edinburgh Castle or the Ghostly Tales of Edinburgh's Royal Mile Walking Tour.
  • Age restrictions: The minimum age requirement for Edinburgh ghost tours is 5 years. For certain Edinburgh ghost tour experiences like the night tour or the whisky tasting experience, visitors have to be 18 years and above.
  • Accessibility constraints: Certain parts of the Edinburgh ghost tours are not accessible for people with reduced mobility. For more information on this, please refer to your tickets.
  • Suitability: Some parts of the Edinburgh ghost tours experience have flashing lights and loud sounds. Owing to this, the tours may not be suitable for visitors with photosensitivity, epilepsy, and those with heart conditions.

Our guide was David RIzzio - foul-mouthed, irreverent, camp and a very fast walker. Amongst grisly ghost stories and macarbre murder tales, he also found time to heap abuse on Americans, the English, J.K. Rowling, people who walk slowly, people who don't know how to turn their phones into flashlights, other ghost tour operators, his colleagues, his ex, people in general... A hugely entertaining evening.

Linda was brilliant at giving insight and making it a fun and memorable experience. She went above and beyond to answer questions and make the day enjoyable. The tour was done really well with it starting outside the castle and touring through the castle walls and Linda finding quiet locations to give information so we could all hear. Would definitely recommend.
