Designed by the German architect Friedrich von Schmidt in the Neo-Gothic style, the construction of Vienna City Hall spanned from 1872 to 1883. This majestic building houses the Mayor's office, city council chambers, and the Vienna Landtag diet. In the late 19th century, the need for a new city hall became evident as the old town hall had become cramped. The Vienna City Hall's prime location on the grand Ringstraße, amidst other iconic structures like the Vienna State Opera and the Austrian Parliament Building, solidified its significance. Costing approximately 14 million florins, jointly funded by the City of Vienna and the Imperial-Royal government, the Vienna City Hall briefly held the title of the world's tallest building from 1892 to 1894, until it was surpassed by Milwaukee City Hall.

Vienna City Hall's architecture draws inspiration from Flemish and Brabant Gothic designs, notably resembling the Brussels Town Hall. It boasts a grand façade adorned with five towers, including a central spire crowned by the iconic Rathausmann statue, now a symbol of Vienna. Inside, the vast structure is organized around seven inner courtyards, evoking a Baroque influence. With a sprawling area of 113,000 m2 across three floors and two basements housing 2,987 rooms, it combines brickwork, predominantly from the Leitha Mountains, with elegant limestone accents and ashlar masonry. Adjacent to this historic building lies the Rathauspark, while within its walls, the Wiener Rathauskeller restaurant beckons with its baroque halls and a delectable range of Viennese culinary delights.
