Rome Pantheon | Ancient temple-turned-church

Originally a temple dedicated to all the Roman gods, the Roman Pantheon went through a fascinating transformation, becoming a Christian church that continues to inspire awe today. Step inside this architectural wonder and discover its rich history, from its pagan past to its enduring role as a place of worship. Its awe-inspiring dome reaches for the sky, while the oculus funnels light from the heavens, making playful patterns on the floor below.

From expertly curated Rome Pantheon ticket options to comprehensive travel information, here's everything you need for an unforgettable visit.

Things to know before booking tickets to Pantheon Rome

  • General admission to the Pantheon costs €5, but it comes with long queues, sometimes stretching up to an hour during peak hours. There are typically three lines at the entrance—one for pre-booked ticket holders, one for those who are purchasing on-spot tickets with cash and the other for those purchasing on-spot tickets by card. Fast-track tickets (starting at €7) let you skip the ticket line. However, you’ll still need to go through the ticket redemption queue and security, which can be long during peak season.
  • If you want a completely hassle-free experience, hosted entry tickets are a great option. A dedicated host will meet you at the entrance with pre-validated tickets, allowing you to skip the redemption queue and assisting you through the entire process.
  • An hour before Mass begins (which is at 5pm on Saturdays and pre-holidays, and 10:30am on Sundays and holidays), the Pantheon closes itself to tourist traffic. You can still visit during this time, but sightseeing won't be allowed. If you're visiting as a tourist, consider booking a slot 2-3 hours before Mass, or after.
  • A guided tour takes your Pantheon visit to the next level, revealing its secrets—from the perfect dome to the royal tombs. Small-group tours (up to 15 guests) make the experience more intimate as compared to a regular group (up to 25-30 guests). Prefer to explore solo? An audio guide, available in eight languages, lets you discover the site at your own pace.
  • European citizens aged 18-25 can enjoy discounted tickets. Entry is free for residents of Rome and under-18s, but a ticket is still required.
  • There's much to see in the Eternal City, so book a Hop-On-Hop-Off tour that grants you priority access to the Rome Pantheon, along with stops at popular attractions like the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Vatican and more.

Rome Pantheon

The Rome Pantheon has one main entrance, a large portico with Corinthian columns. This is consistent with the design of many Roman temples, which typically have a single entrance at the front. Upon arrival, you will come across three separate lines:

  • Queue 1 (left queue): For those looking to purchase tickets using cash payments.
  • Queue 2 (middle queue): For those with pre-reserved tickets.
  • Queue 3 (right queue): For those who prefer purchasing tickets with card payments.

Keep in mind that the middle line moves swiftly. We highly recommend purchasing your tickets online in advance to expedite your visit. Be sure to select the correct queue to avoid any unnecessary delays.

Pantheon Tickets Rules
  • Since the Rome Pantheon is a church, the dress code mandates modest clothing that covers one's knees and shoulders.
  • While photography is permitted, the usage of flash and tripods are not.
  • Smoking inside the church premises is prohibited.
  • No pets, except for service animals, are allowed inside the Pantheon at Rome.
  • It is also not possible to consume food and drinks inside the pantheon.
Timing
  • Try to arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointed time to ensure you begin your tour promptly. If you're booking on-spot tickets, it is recommended that you arrive even earlier so that you can avail the entry slot of your choice.
  • Be prepared for security checks, so pack light and don't bring along any valuables.
  • Try the whisper test: Stand under the oculus and experience the incredible acoustics. Even a soft whisper fills the entire space.
  • If you're in Rome in the months of April and May, try to catch the petal shower on the day of the Pentecost, which happens about 50 days after Easter.
  • Snap a picture of the Fontana del Pantheon that's located before the monument; the fountain foregrounds the Pantheon beautifully.
  • After your visit, take some time out to explore the cafes and shops at Piazza della Rotonda.
  • If possible, try and stay in central Rome so you'll not only be close to the Pantheon, but also other landmarks like the Colosseum, Vatican, etc.
Rome Pantheon
  • Di Rienzo: The spread includes traditional Lazio cuisine and includes oysters and sea food. Don't miss the charcuterie and cheese board, the mussel and clam sauté, etc. Di Rienzo is 1 m away from the Pantheon.
  • Armando al Pantheon: Classics here include their polpette (meatballs), spaghetti aglio, olio e pepperoncino (pasta in garlic and hot pepper). Armando al Pantheon is just 89 m away from the Pantheon.
  • Pietro al Pantheon: This restaurant is a go-to for authentic Roman food that's served in pans. Must-try dishes include pizza and their house wine. Pietro al Pantheon is 600 m away from the Pantheon.

The queue for online ticket bookings was very long and having to exchange the voucher for the tickets on the Piazza Navona detracted from the experience but inside the Pantheon was very good. In spite of zero control on the numbers admitted, there was sufficient space to look at everything.

Walking around Rome is always nice, but the monuments we visited are truly wonderful. Having made reservations in advance allowed us to take our time and enjoy the experience at our own pace. The lines moved quickly, and the staff were always friendly and helpful.

Super easy. All the info is in the app. Your tickets are activated 24 hours in advance. The meeting point was changed at the last minute. We received all the details well in advance via email. The person we were supposed to meet arrived on time as agreed. A friendly man, he helpfully set up the guide on my phone, gave us all the necessary instructions, and we were inside in no time. In short, highly recommended.

The villa is a spendid example of a combination of Baroque art architecture and Roman and Greek art statues and other artefacts. As a bonus you get the paintings, where Carvaggio is the winner. Only the 6 paintings of him are a good reason to visit.
