Eat your way through Rome’s past: Campo de’ Fiori’s market energy pairs with the Jewish Ghetto’s timeless recipes.

  • Everything you get: At Campo de’ Fiori, wander through a lively daytime market bursting with produce, cheeses, and fresh breads, then return in the evening as it transforms into a buzzing street-food hub with outdoor dining. In the Jewish Ghetto, taste iconic fried artichokes and sweet ricotta pies, where every bite reflects centuries of tradition and invention.
  • Why choose this: Campo de’ Fiori gives you the light, seasonal side of Roman food (think fresh off the farmer's table), whereas Rome’s Ghetto (Europe's oldest Jewish community) prides itself on dishes born out of adaptation. Tasted together, they explain why Roman cuisine can be both delicate and rich, simple and complex.
  • Upgrades: Upgrade your tour with Trastevere, where rustic, hearty trattoria dishes like guanciale pasta and slow-braised meats balance the market-fresh flavors of Campo and the historic specialties of the Jewish Ghetto.

Tips & hacks

  • Review the itinerary: Before booking, ensure that the tour's itinerary aligns with your culinary interests. Choose the best experience for you based on whether you're looking to experience specific dishes or a broad sampling of Roman cuisine.
  • Size matters: If you're seeking a deep dive into Rome's culinary scene, consider a private tour or limited participant tour as they tend to offer a more intimate experience, allowing for personalized interactions with the guide.
  • Plan your day: Most tours span between 3-4 hours. Additionally, these tours tend to include a lot of walking. Make sure you don't have back-to-back commitments so you can enjoy the tour without feeling rushed, and give yourself enough time to rest afterward.
  • Allergies & restrictions: Inform your guide in advance about any allergies or dietary restrictions to ensure a customized and safe experience.
  • Pace yourself: Remember, it's a marathon, not a sprint. Even if the portions seem small, the variety can add up. Relish each bite and avoid rushing through the dishes to prevent feeling too full by the end.
  • No tipping required: While tipping isn't obligatory in Rome due to service charges often being included, a small tip for exceptional service is a kind gesture and appreciated.
  • Get hold of a city pass: Given the amount of walking in most food tours, a city pass can be invaluable. It provides easy access to public transport, ensuring you explore Rome without tiring out.
  • Consider your fellow travelers: If you're traveling with children or elderly family members, opt for shorter tours to accommodate their stamina. For a relaxed experience, consider a golf cart tour.
  • Be open-minded:  Embrace culinary surprises and be open to trying new flavors and dishes. Rome offers a diverse gastronomic landscape, so allow yourself to step out of your comfort zone.
  • Seasonal specialties: Rome's culinary scene is deeply rooted in seasonality. To get a genuine taste of Roman cuisine, do your research ahead of the tour. Whether it's artichokes in spring or truffles in autumn, indulging in fresh produce promises an unparalleled gastronomic experience.
  • Ask questions: Your guide is a treasure trove of information. Ask about the history of dishes, the significance of places, or any other fascinating insights and stories.

Roman culinary customs & culture

  • Food & siesta: Romans traditionally take their largest meal, il pranzo (lunch) around 1 PM, followed by a leisurely siesta. Dinner tends to be lighter and later, often starting at 8 PM or even later in the summer. Perfect to enjoy the city's vibrant nightlife.
  • Coffee etiquette: Do not order a cappuccino after 11 AM; it's considered a morning beverage. After your meal, opt for an espresso or un caffè to savor the true essence of Italian coffee.
  • Aperitivo hour: Join locals in their evening ritual of aperitivo—a pre-dinner drink accompanied by light snacks—to whet the appetite and socialize.
  • Leisurely dining: Don’t rush through your meals. You’re meant to savor them at an unhurried pace. Engage in meaningful conversations and forge connections over food, just as the Romans do.
  • Wine pairing: Romans take wine pairing seriously, so take the opportunity to learn from the experts. Discover which wines complement your chosen dishes, and savor the harmony of flavors as the Romans do.
  • Dining al fresco: Romans relish dining outdoors, and many restaurants offer al fresco seating. It's a great way to soak in the city's atmosphere while savoring a meal.

We had a wonderful pizza and tiramisu cooking class with our teacher Mimi! The class was very fun, well organized, and suitable for adults and kids. Mimi explained everything clearly, showed us all the steps, and made the whole experience relaxed and enjoyable. We learned how to make real Italian pizza from scratch and the tiramisu was absolutely delicious. The best part was eating everything we made at the end! Mimi was very friendly, patient, and funny, which made the whole experience even better. This was one of the highlights of our trip to Rome and we would highly recommend this cooking class to anyone visiting Rome. Thank you, Mimi, for a great experience!
