Join an exclusive tour of the Arena, the gladiators’ battlefield, limited to just a few visitors at a time.

  • Everything you get: Enter through the Gladiator’s Gate and walk directly onto the partially reconstructed Arena floor, an area not included with standard entry. Your expert guide brings the space to life with stories of gladiator training, fierce battles, and political spectacle. Then explore the imperial ruins of Palatine Hill and the grand temples, arches, and basilicas of the Roman Forum.
  • Why choose this: Standard Colosseum access doesn’t include the arena floor, a rare privilege due to its very limited capacity and preservation needs. See the amphitheater from a gladiator’s-eye view, learn its significance from your guide, and finish amid the Forum’s ruins.
  • Upgrade: Choose your ideal group size for the Arena experience. Opt for a regular group (up to 25 guests) for a value-led option, a small group (15 guests) for better interaction, or an ultra small-group tour (maximum 7 guests) for the most personalized and immersive gladiator’s-eye experience.

Experiencing the legendary Roman Colosseum

The Colosseum is the symbol of Rome’s glorious past, where history echoes through every stone. Built between 70-80 AD, this thousand-year-old amphitheater once hosted epic gladiator battles, mock naval wars, and dramatic spectacles that thrilled over 50,000 roaring spectators. To this day, the Colosseum continues to captivate millions, earning its place as one of the most visited landmarks in the world—a must-see for anyone setting foot in Rome.

As Rome travel experts, we’ve thoughtfully curated a range of tours and ticket options, along with a handy travel guide packed with everything you need for a seamless visit.

Things to know before booking Colosseum experiences

  • Your tickets include timed entry to the Colosseum, allowing you to enter within a specific time slot chosen at checkout.
  • Access to Levels 1 and 2, including the museum, is included with most tickets. Levels 3-5 remain closed to the public due to restoration efforts.
  • Certain areas of the Colosseum require special tickets. Upgrade your experience to walk the historic stage where gladiators once fought with Arena access or enjoy access to the tunnels and chambers beneath the Colosseum with guided tours with Underground access. These tours are highly popular and tend to sell out quickly—book at least two weeks in advance to secure your spot.
  • Most tickets include entry to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, completing the trio of must-visit ancient Roman sites. While the Colosseum entry is timed, these two attractions can be visited anytime within 24 hours.
  • Given the rich history of the ancient amphitheatre, guided tours are a great way to go. An expert local guide will help you uncover stories and details about the iconic landmark that that are easy to miss when exploring on your own.
  • Short on time? Opt for these quick one-hour tours that focus solely on the Colosseum. If traveling with family, look for kid-friendly tours tailored to younger audiences. For a more comprehensive experience, you can upgrade to include the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, extending your tour to approximately three hours.
  • Small group tours (up to 10-15 guests) offer a more intimate setting and detailed commentary, while private tours allow you to tailor the itinerary entirely to your preferences. These are often led by archaeologists or local experts for a deeper dive into the history of ancient Rome.
  • For a budget-friendly option, choose tickets with multilingual audio guides, guidebooks or multimedia videos that provide informative commentary and 3D reconstructions. These options allow you to explore at your own pace while still gaining valuable insights.
  • The Colosseum is one of Rome's busiest attractions, and waiting times can exceed 2-3 hours during peak season. Pre-booking your tickets ensures you can skip the ticket lines. However, all visitors must pass through security checks, so arrive early to avoid delays and ensure a smooth entry.

Is it better to book tickets to the Colosseum online or on-spot?

Additionally, some tickets offer combined access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, providing a more comprehensive experience. Booking online also offer added advantages like:

The queue for online ticket bookings was very long and having to exchange the voucher for the tickets on the Piazza Navona detracted from the experience but inside the Pantheon was very good. In spite of zero control on the numbers admitted, there was sufficient space to look at everything.

Super easy. All the info is in the app. Your tickets are activated 24 hours in advance. The meeting point was changed at the last minute. We received all the details well in advance via email. The person we were supposed to meet arrived on time as agreed. A friendly man, he helpfully set up the guide on my phone, gave us all the necessary instructions, and we were inside in no time. In short, highly recommended.
