Home to the Farnese Collection

While all the collections in the museum are impressive, the Farnese Collection deserves special mention as it contains artifacts from Renaissance-era Italy. Curated by Alexander Farnese (who later went on to become Pope Paul III), his passion for collecting bronzes, busts and marble sculptures was carried on by his family members. King Charles Bourbon, who inherited the collection from his mother, the last descendent of the Farnese family, transferred the collection to the museum in Naples.

Last entry: 30 minutes before the closing time. 

Best time to visit: Since the Naples museum is hugely popular, try to visit between Wednesday and Thursday, as soon as the museum opens for a quieter experience. After 4pm or early in the morning is the best time to visit the museum. Avoid going on Sundays because it is the busiest day of the week. Visiting during January and February, or between October and November can also help you avoid the tourist traffic of peak season.

Note: If Tuesday is a public holiday, the museum will be shut on Wednesday instead.

Getting there

By metro: You can get to Piazza Cavour Station by taking Metro Line 2. From here, it's about a 10-minute walk. Museum Station is also accessible via Line 1.

By car: There are car parking facilities available at the museum for visitors with disabilities only. While driving in Naples is not recommended owing to the presence of Traffic Limit Zones, there are few public parking spaces to check out if you must drive.

The Gods Return: The bronzes of San Casciano

February 16-June 30, 2024

This exhibition showcases a collection of bronze artifects retrieved from the Bagno Grande Etruscan and Roman thermal sanctuary of San Casciano dei Bagni. The collections on display include votive offerings, bronze coins and statues that were deposited in the thermal basin as religious and cultural offerings.

In the Fresco rooms, see around 60 lesser known artifacts from the Vesuvius era. Salvaged mostly from Pompeii, see garden furnishing elements and also gladiator remnants like helmets, shields and swords. Also see the recreated Pompeii Amphitheater at the exhibition.

Excellent service! We visited the major attractions in Naples using the panoramic bus. A single ticket for two lines with a total of 20 stops. You can get off at any stop and then get back on the bus (approximately every 30 minutes). Tour with audio guide.

We traveled with my wife and we only had 36 hours in Naples, but thanks to the Hop On Hop Off service we were able to enjoy an unforgettable stay. The service was superb, from the staff at the departure points to the drivers and guides, always friendly and willing to guide. The two tours they offer are ideal to get to know the best of the city: Circuit A tours the historic area, the Castel dell'Ovo, the Lungomare, and offers breathtaking views of Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples. Circuit B goes up towards the upper part, passing by Capodimonte and the National Archaeological Museum, where we had a visit that was really incredible, full of history and art. The system of stops allows us to make the most of the time, going up and down with total flexibility. In a few hours, we were able to have a complete view of Naples, enjoying both its monuments and its unique atmosphere. Highly recommended for those who have little time and want to take the best of the city.

An absolute must-see in Naples. The archaeological museum is exceptionally rich: mosaics, statues, frescoes and objects from Pompeii and Herculaneum are simply impressive. Each room is fascinating and offers a better understanding of life in antiquity. The museum is vast, well-organized and well worth spending several hours in. A fascinating place for history buffs and curious visitors alike. I highly recommend it!

I liked the variety of themed rooms on the history of different cultures. Many exceptional monuments. What I did not like was the little attention of a lady that there was no way to inform the printed guide or self-guide of the museum. She just told me to read a poster in Italian and English that I did not know because I did not know the language. Otherwise nice experience

Magnificent statues referencing Roman, Egyptian, and Greek mythology. A beautiful museum with works discovered at the site of Pompeii. One small downside: the audio guide isn't great. It's better to hire a guide.
