Things to know before booking Naples Underground tours

  • Naples Underground offers three main types of experiences: tunnels, catacombs, and ruins. Here’s a quick breakdown.

(i) Tunnels: Explore ancient aqueducts and WWII shelters with a guided tour of the Napoli Sotterranea or the Spanish Quarters. These sites can only be explored with a guide, who is essential for navigating and understanding the spaces. Your expert English or Italian-speaking guide offers unique insights into the city’s history and architecture.

(ii) Catacombs: Discover early Christian burial sites adorned with Byzantine frescoes at the Catacombs of San Gennaro and San Gaudioso. With extended validity tickets, flexibly visit one after the other within a period of 12 months. Enjoy a 1-hour guided tour and then explore its basilicas to your heart's content.

(iii) Ruins: Step beneath the San Lorenzo Maggiore Basilica to enter the Neapolis Sotterrata and find the remains of an ancient Roman market! The entire Monumental Complex can be visited independently, with a free audio guide available to download on-site. You can even book a guided tour on the spot based on availability.

  • A typical tour lasts from 1 to 1.5 hours. The Catacombs and Sotterranea often sell out during peak seasons; it’s recommended to book at least 48 hours in advance.
  • Please note that most underground spaces are not accessible by wheelchair, and guests taller than 190 cm may have difficulty entering some areas.

The young man who guided us was very clear and engaging. The description of the fabulous nativity scene in the sacristy of the basilica was delightful. The catacombs were a source of interest for my wife and me in terms of the past and present history of the district. Special thanks for the commitment of the young people from the La Paranza cooperative.

I visited underground Naples in the Spanish quarters with my family and a nice group of other tourists. Giulia, our young but well-prepared guide, took us through the narrow underground passages, introducing us to a reality of Naples that we did not know, with anecdotes and curiosities that made the tour very interesting and lighter than expected. Perhaps also thanks to the presence of O' Munaciello??? Highly recommended!
