NaplesMount Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius, the only active volcano in mainland Europe, towers at 1,281 meters and offers a great adventure for those visiting Naples, Pompeii, and beyond. The eerie ruins of previous eruptions and the expansive views of the Bay of Naples will stun you as you stand at the crater's edge. This iconic destination promises an exhilarating journey, combining natural beauty with a profound sense of wonder and discovery. Whether you're a history buff or an adventure seeker, Mount Vesuvius is a must-visit.

Things to know before booking your Mount Vesuvius tour

  • You can reach Vesuvius from Naples or Pompeii by car or public transport. Consider tours that include round-trip transportation from Naples, Pompeii, or Rome; allowing you the chance to simply sit back, relax and explore, without having to worry about logistics.
  • Many tours feature experienced volcanologists or local guides who offer insights into the volcanic history and geology. Given the rich and complex history of the region, exploring the volcano with an expert guide will prove to be a fruitful experience. But if you rather make the hike at your own pace, then opt for an audio guide so you can learn all about the volcano on your own.
  • Most tours last about 3-4 hours, including transportation and the hike. Ensure the tour fits your schedule and includes sufficient time for the hike and sightseeing, especially if you plan to visit the other sites on the same day.
  • The hike to the crater of Mount Vesuvius can be steep and physically demanding. Ensure you’re prepared for the trek and consider your fitness level; the altitude and physical exertion can be challenging for some individuals.
  • Visiting Pompeii or Herculaneum alongside Mount Vesuvius is a popular option. These ancient sites offer context to the volcanic eruption. Consider a combined tour that includes both attractions for a more comprehensive and budget-friendly experience.
  • Typical tours include entrance fees to Mount Vesuvius National Park. However, meals, beverages, and personal expenses are often not included unless specified. Some tours offer options for wine tastings or visits to local eateries. Be aware of additional costs such as tips for optional activities. Confirm what is included in the tour price to avoid surprises.
  • Tours are weather-dependent, so it is essential to confirm if your tour will proceed in the event of adverse weather.
  • For solo travelers and backpackers, inexpensive tours are available starting at €22. Mid-range tours cost about €80 per person and can include stops at Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Naples. If you are on a tight budget, you might want to consider just getting the entry ticket and using an audio guide to explore on your own.
  • You can book round-trip tours from Naples, Rome, and Pompeii, with or without live guides, depending on your preferences.
  • For a more culturally immersive experience with geological and fun facts, choose guided tours. Pair your trip to Mount Vesuvius with day trips to Herculaneum or Pompeii to learn about the history and culture of these Italian cities. Opt for the sunset climb to capture spectacular views of the Gulf of Naples and surrounding areas during sunset.
  • For a hassle-free trip, choose tickets with round-trip transfers so you can relax and not worry about the logistics of commuting.
  • The Mount Vesuvius hike is moderately difficult and requires reasonable physical fitness.
  • Given that it is an active volcano, your plans may be subject to weather conditions and other safety regulations.

To reach the iconic crater of Mount Vesuvius, you’ll need to hike the Gran Cono Trail (Trail No. 5). This moderately challenging route offers breathtaking views and brings you up close to the volcano’s rim.

Trail highlights

  • Length: 3,807 meters (round trip)
  • Elevation Gain: ~140 meters
  • Maximum Altitude: 1,170 meters
  • Gradient: 14%
  • Difficulty: Medium – Suitable for moderately fit hikers
  • Duration: ~3 hours (round trip)

What to expect?

The trail begins at the Piazzale in Ercolano, 1,000 meters above sea level. It’s a well-maintained path that winds through volcanic terrain, rewarding hikers with panoramic views of the Bay of Naples and the dramatic crater rim. While Vesuvius has other trails offering unique perspectives, the Gran Cono Trail is the most direct and popular route to the summit.

Getting there

Access the trailhead via the Ercolano-Vesuvio Provincial Road. Parking is available along the road, managed by the Municipality of Ercolano. Make sure to purchase your trail tickets before reserving parking at www.parkingsuvio.it.

Accessibility
  • The hiking trails (apart from path 11) are not wheelchair-accessible and may be challenging for guests with impaired mobility.
  • Due to the steep gradient and trail conditions, climbing to the crater is not recommended for individuals with serious health issues, including respiratory or cardiovascular problems.
  • Accessible options are available for trips to Pompeii, Naples, and Herculaneum.

A very well-organized trip, everything on time. A little more time would have been useful in Pompeii. We will definitely come back here again.

I really enjoyed the walk, it's obviously exceptional to walk on a volcano. The only downside was that there were 3 of us, and 2 of the 3 audioguides we'd downloaded before the exclusion failed after just 10 minutes. Fortunately, only one of them lasted until the end.

The transfer went smoothly. The total time allotted for boarding, disembarking, and sightseeing—80 minutes—was very tight; it would be better to extend it to 120 minutes. Otherwise, everything was fine. On the return trip, the bus driver stopped at the train station upon request.

It was fascinating to visit Vesuvius, and very helpful to have a pre-arranged minibus from straight outside Pompeii that allowed me to tick off both of them in the same day.

Very good excursion. Enough time at each site. It's not rushed, you have plenty of time to see everything there is to see, except perhaps at Pompeii, for those who really want to see everything.

Vesuvius and Pompeii were fantastic. Could certainly have spent longer at Pompeii and perhaps a bit less time at Herculaneum. The tour itself was well organised and very pleasant tour staff A bit more information in advance would have been helpful eg a rough itinerary Also on the itinerary we did get it said the price of entry to the 3 sites was not included when it was We almost bought separate tickets but thankfully didn't But those flight concerns aside a fantastic day and would recommend

Everything was so organised, even though we had some timing problems, because our lunch in the restaurant lasted too long and we were at risk of not going on top of Vesuvius. However, our driver - Marchello (if i remember his name right, sorry) - did his job top-notch! Special thanks to our guide - Sarah! She is charming, adorable and with a great sense of humour! She told us lots of interesting stuff and vital tips for our further exploration of Rome. It was such a pleasure to listen to her and be guided by her through the whole excursion. Marchello and Sarah made my day in Pompei even better than I thought it would be. I would really like to see Sarah as my guide next time! Thank a lot!
