Duomo Florence | Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore

Iconic in every manner, the Duomo Florence, officially known as the Florence Cathedral or Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, encompasses the Italian Renaissance within a single towering structure. Best known for its magnificent red dome, the cathedral was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi back in 1436 and dedicated to Saint Mary (Virgin of the Flowers).

Things to know before visiting Duomo Florence

  • Waiting times at the Duomo can stretch to 1-2 hours, especially during busy periods. Pre-booking your entry tickets can save you a lot of time by letting you breeze past the ticketing line. If you really want to avoid any wait, go for a hosted entry—you won’t even have to queue for ticket redemption. Just remember, you’ll still need to go through security.
  • While getting into the cathedral itself is free, the other must-see areas inside—like the Bell Tower, Crypt of Santa Reparata, Baptistery, Brunelleschi's Dome, and the Opera del Duomo Museum—aren't. Standard tickets typically cover all of these, but if you want to climb the Dome or Bell Tower, you'll need to buy separate tickets.
  • Each attraction within the Duomo complex has its own schedule, so planning can be tricky. Pick your slot carefully aligned with what areas of the complex you want to see, since the entry is slot based. Allocate between 1.5 to 2 hours for the cathedral complex. If you plan to climb the Dome or the Tower, set aside an additional hour for that portion of your visit.
  • The Florence Cathedral isn’t just another church—it’s packed with history, great architecture, and deep religious significance. A guided tour can bring all of this to life with priority access and captivating stories. Note that if your tour includes Dome and tower access, you’ll be unaccompanied for the climb. If you prefer to explore at your own pace but still want all the details, consider using an audio guide.
  • Some tours, especially VIP or early morning ones, give you a serene Duomo experience with fewer crowds. They often include access to exclusive sites like the Secret Terraces, which are usually off-limits. Within smaller groups, typically capped at 10 people, you will find it easier to interact with the guide and even find shared interests with fellow travelers.
  • Up for a challenge? Grab the tickets that include the climb to Brunelleschi’s Dome or Giotto’s Bell Tower. The views from the top are absolutely stunning and totally worth the effort! Just remember, it’s no small feat—there are 463 steps up to the Dome and 414 steps to the top of the Bell Tower, and there’s no elevator. These experiences are super popular, so booking in advance is a smart move.

I was able to quickly check my ticket at a nearby location. The staff at the entrance were very friendly. Since we had purchased our tickets online from Chile, everything went smoothly. Inside, it was easy to view all the works, as there weren't that many visitors, perhaps because it's winter in Italy. The works on display are of immeasurable beauty.

Our tour of the Uffizi Museum with Sara was truly one of the highlights of our time in Florence. From the very beginning, she brought the museum to life in a way that made the experience both engaging and memorable. Sara’s knowledge of the artwork and history was impressive, but what really set her apart was her ability to tell the stories behind the pieces. She didn’t just guide us from room to room — she connected the art to the people, politics, and culture of the time, making everything feel meaningful and easy to understand. She was also incredibly attentive to our group, making sure everyone could see, hear, and stay engaged, even in the busier areas of the museum. Her pacing was perfect, allowing us time to appreciate the masterpieces without ever feeling rushed. Thanks to Sara, we left the Uffizi with a much deeper appreciation for the art and its significance. We would highly recommend her to anyone looking to make the most of their visit — she turned a world-class museum into an unforgettable experience.

The meeting, entrance, and tour were handled perfectly. Our guide was very good at telling us lots of stories related to what we were able to visit and answering our questions and curiosities. Thank you for the pleasant experience.

Our tour guide was amazing and super informative. The views are incredible from the lookout point and the 463 stairs offset the wine we enjoyed after the climb!! Highly recommend!!

It's so easy to see all the sights and to be able to hop off when you want to see more. We went up into a small village in the mountains had lunch and a wander round before getting the bus back to Florence it was magical the views were amazing!
