SienaSiena Cathedral

Siena Cathedral: Unfinished Gothic grandeur in the heart of Tuscany

The Siena Cathedral  is the most important church in the city, built in honor of the Virgin Mary by Pope Alexander IV back in 1255 A.D. The cathedral was built in an area that used to house a small chapel, called the "Old Cathedral of Siena", which also served as the seat of the Bishop of Siena until 1549. Renowned for its spectacular interiors and unique marble flooring, the Siena Cathedral is famously incomplete, boasting a breathtaking facade that abruptly stops midway. Read on to learn about its grandiose, unrealized plans, which tickets to book and how to visit.

Things to know before booking Siena Cathedral tickets

  • If you're only interested in the main cathedral and Piccolomini Library, the basic entry ticket will suffice. However, the OPA SI Pass offers best value for money, granting access to the entire complex, including the Baptistery, Crypt, Museum, and more, along with an audio guide. Though you can explore everything in about two hours, the pass is valid for three consecutive days, allowing you to take your time.
  • The Siena Cathedral floor is a masterpiece in itself, inlaid with intricate marble panels portraying biblical scenes. However, it's only uncovered for visitors during specific times of the year; in 2024 it is open during June 6 – July 31; August 18 – October 16. If seeing the floor is a priority for you, plan your visit accordingly. Note that the prices might be higher during these periods.
  • Prices vary depending on the type of ticket and the season. But, with us you'll often find promotional offers so book away! Little ones (ages 7-11) can enjoy a 70% discount on their OPA SI Pass, and children under 6 get a 90% discount! Free admission is available for certain groups like Residents and born in the Municipality of Siena, Italian journalists, people with disability and their companion, Students of the University of Siena and the University for Foreigners, and Parish groups of the Archdiocese of Siena with letter from the Parish Priest.
  • The Cathedral has a dedicated ramp for disabled access. However, the Museum, Crypt, and Baptistery currently do not have accessibility systems in place.
  • If you’re looking for a short excursion from Florence, opt for the day trip that takes you to Chianti, Monteriggioni and San Gimignano besides the Siena Cathedral. A professional guide will help you skip lines at the Cathedral and share exciting insights about this historically and artistically rich landmark.
  • Access to the terrace does not include the Gates of Heaven tour. The terrace is simply a viewing platform on the unfinished façade of the cathedral, offering a panoramic view of Siena. In contrast, the Gates of Heaven tour provides a unique attic experience with a bird's-eye view of the cathedral's interiors.
  • If you visit during the Palio di Siena, get a ticket with terrace platform access and you can see the iconic horse race from this vantage point. Isn't it a rather unique way to experience the thrill of the Palio with the pretty views of Siena?
  • If you didn’t get enough of the Gothic grandeur of the Siena Cathedral, get combo tickets and visit San Gimignano, known as the city of ‘Fine Towers’ and feast on the skyline it offers.

Exploring the Siena Duomo complex

cathedral

The Cathedral

Access: Included with all tickets

This is the main attraction, a beautiful Gothic masterpiece. The black and white marble facade is iconic, and the interior boasts great sculptures, frescoes by Duccio, and stained glass windows. One of the major highlights is the mosaic floor, only revealed seasonally. Created by artists between the 14th and 16th centuries, its 56 panels portray biblical scenes, allegories, and history.

Baptistry of San Giovanni

Baptistry of San Giovanni

Access: Included with OPA SI Pass

This octagonal building is the baptismal font of Siena, located beneath the cathedral’s east end, and was built between the 1310s and the 1320s. Camaino di Crescentino oversaw most of the interior's construction, finishing around 1325. The star of the baptistry is the hexagonal font, a Renaissance masterpiece sculpted by Donatello, Ghiberti, and della Quercia. Its detailed bronze panels and statues are a must-see.

Museo dell'Opera

Museo dell'Opera

Access: Included with OPA SI Pass

Founded in 1869, housed in the north aisle of the 'New Cathedral', Museo dell'Opera is the oldest private museum of Italy. The museum houses an extensive collection of artworks and treasures including sculptures by Pisano, textiles, goldwork, banners, tabernacles, and the famed Duccio di Buoninsegna stained glass window. It is a journey through artistic and religious heritage of Siena.

Cathedral Crypt

Cathedral Crypt

Access: Included with OPA SI Pass

The area beneath the Cathedral chancel, the Crypt of Siena Cathedral is an extraordinary find that had been hidden for centuries! Hidden for centuries and rediscovered in 1999, it boasts remarkably well-preserved frescoes from the late 13th century. These scenes depict stories from the Old and New Testaments, offering a rare glimpse into medieval artistic style and religious narratives.

Piccolomini Library

Piccolomini Library

Access: Included with all the tickets

It was commissioned by Cardinal Francesco Piccolomini, who later became Pope Pius III. It was designed to house the precious manuscripts collected by his uncle, Pope Pius II. You can also see the vibrant frescoes by Pinturicchio and his workshop, illustrating the life of Pope Pius II. Built adjacent to the Siena Cathedral, the library contains over 200 manuscripts (some dating back to the 12th century) and Siena's famed illuminated choir books.

terrace

Terrace

Access: Included with OPA SI Pass

Climb the terrace on the unfinished façade (Facciatone) of the Duomo Nuovo for panoramic views of Siena and the surrounding Tuscan landscape. It is accessible from the upper floor of the Museo dell'Opera. The façade was part of an ambitious expansion halted by the Black Death in the 14th century. Be aware that access may be limited due to weather, and queues can be long during peak hours.

  • Visit early to not just beat the crowd, but appreciate the stained glass windows in their soft beauty of the warm light.
  • Explore strategically, start with the main cathedral interior. If you have the OPA SI Pass, tackle the Crypt and Baptistery next, as their queues are usually shorter. Save the Piccolomini Library for a quieter moment of reflection.
  • If you're up for a challenge and have the OPA SI Pass, consider the Panoramic Terrace for stunning city views. This vantage point offers a different perspective of the unfinished facade's grandeur. Just remember, it involves narrow stairs.
  • Pack some light snacks and water, especially if you plan to spend a longer time exploring. Food options near the cathedral can be pricey.
  • Look for the intriguing carved choir stalls within the main cathedral. Each stall features a unique depiction of a scene from the Bible.
  • Flash photography is not allowed inside the cathedral. Opt for natural light or low-light settings to capture the beauty of the artwork.
dress code

Since the Siena Cathedral is a place of religious interest, there is a strict dress code that applies to both men and women. Here are the key points to remember:

  • Shoulders must be covered for both men and women.
  • Shorts, skirts, and dresses should be at or below the knee. Shorts above the knee are not permitted.
  • Men should wear long trousers and a shirt with sleeves to the elbow.
  • Tank tops and bare shoulders are not allowed.

It's important to note that the Siena Cathedral is known for strictly enforcing these rules. If you arrive improperly dressed, you may be denied entry. We didn't have to wait in line; we just showed up, presented the code, and were given a multi-entry ticket. The whole process was very easy and convenient—we'll definitely do this again for other trips. For sure!

It was so fun! The school itself is beautiful. The building has a large table for everyone to stand at and the set up felt very professional. The food was all the basics (and a little more). I am a solo traveller, but easily fit in. We did the lesson for about 2 hours and then they cooked the pasta for us as we got to sit down and drink wine. Would definitely recommend!!!
