Discovering Aspects Of Mount Vesuvius

mount vesuvius tickets

Geology

  • Mount Vesuvius is located at the Gulf of Naples in Italy.
  • It is said to be the only volcano to have erupted in the last 100 years on the European mainland and was created due to a clash of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates around 25,000 years ago.
  • This Pompeii volcano grew in and is seated in the crater of the Mount Somma volcano.
  • Vesuvius is considered to be a volatile volcano due to the presence of andesite, a volcanic rock that creates a particularly dangerous type of lava that leads to unpredictable and harmful eruptions.
pompeii volcano mount vesuvius tickets

Eruption

  • The most widely-studied Mount Vesuvius eruption is from back in 79 AD when the volcano erupted and ravaged the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
  • The eruption spewed a massive cloud of gases and tephra, along with pumice, molten rock and hot ash, up to about 33 km in air.
  • Scientific inquiries estimate that about 1.5 million tons of volcanic lava spewed out per second, creating unparalleled thermal energy approximately 100,000 times more dangerous than the World War II bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
  • History has recorded about eight occurrences of major eruptions over the last 17,000 years.

Destruction

  • According to recordings in history, the volcanic eruption lasted for about two days; previously, signs of smoke and minor fissures went largely unnoticed by the population since minor tremors were common in the region of Campania.
  • While the exact number of casualties is unknown, it is believed that almost the entire population of 20,000 citizens between the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, were killed.
  • The rapid pace at which the lava and volcanic debris moved through the small towns left no chance of survival
  • This incident is said to have completely changed the region’s coastline landscape.

A very well-organized trip, everything on time. A little more time would have been useful in Pompeii. We will definitely come back here again.

I really enjoyed the walk, it's obviously exceptional to walk on a volcano. The only downside was that there were 3 of us, and 2 of the 3 audioguides we'd downloaded before the exclusion failed after just 10 minutes. Fortunately, only one of them lasted until the end.

The transfer went smoothly. The total time allotted for boarding, disembarking, and sightseeing—80 minutes—was very tight; it would be better to extend it to 120 minutes. Otherwise, everything was fine. On the return trip, the bus driver stopped at the train station upon request.

It was fascinating to visit Vesuvius, and very helpful to have a pre-arranged minibus from straight outside Pompeii that allowed me to tick off both of them in the same day.

Very good excursion. Enough time at each site. It's not rushed, you have plenty of time to see everything there is to see, except perhaps at Pompeii, for those who really want to see everything.

Vesuvius and Pompeii were fantastic. Could certainly have spent longer at Pompeii and perhaps a bit less time at Herculaneum. The tour itself was well organised and very pleasant tour staff A bit more information in advance would have been helpful eg a rough itinerary Also on the itinerary we did get it said the price of entry to the 3 sites was not included when it was We almost bought separate tickets but thankfully didn't But those flight concerns aside a fantastic day and would recommend

Everything was so organised, even though we had some timing problems, because our lunch in the restaurant lasted too long and we were at risk of not going on top of Vesuvius. However, our driver - Marchello (if i remember his name right, sorry) - did his job top-notch! Special thanks to our guide - Sarah! She is charming, adorable and with a great sense of humour! She told us lots of interesting stuff and vital tips for our further exploration of Rome. It was such a pleasure to listen to her and be guided by her through the whole excursion. Marchello and Sarah made my day in Pompei even better than I thought it would be. I would really like to see Sarah as my guide next time! Thank a lot!
