Things to know before booking a Naples to Pompeii day trip

  • Pompeii is just a 30–40 minute journey from Naples. Depending on the experience you choose, you’ll need to plan for at least 4 hours for Pompeii-only tours, 6–8 hours if your tour includes Herculaneum or Mount Vesuvius, and a full day 8–10 hours if you’ve upgraded to include Amalfi Coast destinations.
  • Select tours, such as the Pompeii and Herculaneum Guided Tour with Transfers, include door-to-door pick-up service from Naples hotels, offering maximum convenience. Other experiences, like the Pompeii and Amalfi Coast Day Trip, require you to meet at a designated location, such as central Naples or Naples train stations.
  • For a deeper, hassle-free experience, choose a guided tour with an expert who’ll share insights, answer questions, and handle logistics like skip-the-line access and round-trip transfers. Prefer flexibility? Opt for entry tickets with optional audio guides or guidebooks to explore at your own pace while learning about the key attractions.
  • Given that the tours are long, some tours, especially those including visits to Mount Vesuvius or the Amalfi Coast, include lunch. If you’re traveling independently, you will need to plan your meals, as dining options near Pompeii can be limited.

Visitor tips

  • Exploring Pompeii requires plenty of walking over uneven terrain, so be prepared for the physical demands of the trip. Some tours, especially those including Mount Vesuvius, involve moderate hiking, so be sure the itinerary matches your fitness level.
  • Bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water. There is little shade at Pompeii and temperatures can soar.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes with good traction. The ancient streets are uneven and can be slippery.
  • If you're traveling on your own, pick up a map and plan your route. Pompeii is massive, so prioritize the must-see spots like the Forum, Lupanar, and Villa of the Mysteries.
  • Take a break around midday to avoid the worst of the heat and crowds. Grab a pizza or gelato in the modern town of Pompeii.

We had an incredible tour of Pompeii with our fantastic guide Alfredo, who gave a 2-hour tour in French, after which we explored on our own. His explanations were fascinating and helped us understand so much more as we continued on our own. We highly recommend this tour. We spent 5 hours there without noticing the time fly by and without seeing everything—it was late March, so there were very few people, making it ideal.

Booking was easy. The kiosk where the tour started was easily to find. The tour started on time. The tour guide was perfect! The in-ear gadget functioned perfectly. The guide was pleasant, she told a lot of info, and could answer all our questions. We were really glad we chose the guided tour option.

We had very little wait at the tourist office having booked early and were able to walk straight into the park. I advise the audio rather than the guide book - it wasn't well translated at times and missed some interesting points of interest. Makes a nice souvenir though.

Visiting Pompeii was a unique experience. Our guide at the archeological site, Rosa, was very knowledgeable. Walking through the ruins transported us to the life just before the volcanic eruption. Sorrento was the cherry on top. Beautiful town and the Amalfi coast was fantastic. Our driver Paolo was very skilled, navigating the narrow and windy roads with sup4me confidence. Throughout the day, our guide Antonino was friendly, knowledgeable and funny. A experience highly recommended!!!
