273 steps, not 1,000: The climb is easier than you think
Climbing the Leaning Tower of Pisa is more immersive than strenuous. The 273-step spiral staircase, often mistakenly believed to be 1,000 steps, is actually quite manageable for most visitors. It’s narrow, but not claustrophobic, and worn smooth from centuries of use.

What does the climb feel like?
The stairway gradually winds around the tower’s hollow core, with stone steps subtly sloping to one side due to the iconic tilt. As a result, visitors often describe a “drunken” or off-balance sensation, especially in the middle section where the incline shifts most noticeably beneath your feet.
How much time does it take?
Most visitors complete it in 5 to 10 minutes depending on fitness and crowd flow, with a quicker descent of 3 to 5 minutes. However, your total visit lasts around 30–35 minutes, including mandatory security checks, arriving 10–15 minutes before your timed slot, time spent enjoying panoramic views at the top, and the descent.
Level-by-level view of the ascend
As you ascend, each level of the tower reveals new details. The inner walls are simple and pale, creating a serene contrast to the ornate piazza below. Small slit windows at various levels give peeks of the Duomo, the Baptistery, and the bustling Square of Miracles. You can pause to catch your breath and take in these unexpected frames of Florence’s architectural wonders.

What’s at the top of Pisa Tower?
Reaching the top is exhilarating, not just for the effort, but for the view. At the summit is the Bell Chamber, where seven bells of varying sizes once rang to mark different liturgical hours. You’ll be standing nearly 58 meters above ground, with an open-air 360-degree panorama of Pisa’s rooftops, the Cathedral below, and the Tuscan countryside beyond. The lean is most visually striking here, making it a unique and slightly dizzying photo opportunity.
Things to know before booking your tickets

The most coveted slots, like crisp early mornings or golden late afternoons can vanish 2 to 3 weeks in advance, especially in peak seasons like summers and holidays. Pre-booking ensures you don’t miss out on your ideal time to scale this iconic wonder. Book early!

The Leaning Tower and Cathedral form a part of Pisa Monumental Complex. Four other sites in the Complex; the Baptistery, Camposanto, Opera del Duomo Museum, and Sinopie Museum preserve the city’s Romanesque heritage, medieval frescoes, and original sculptures. For just €10 more, you can explore them all at your own pace, with a validity of up to a year from the chosen date of visit. Add depth to your visit with a multilingual audio guide covering key highlights like the Baptistery’s acoustics, Camposanto’s frescoes, and the museum’s sculpture gallery. You can also upgrade to a guided tour, where a where a local expert connects the architectural details and historical context across sites, offering a richer, more cohesive view of the complex.

Frequently asked questions about Leaning Tower of Pisa tickets
Is the climb to the tower safe?
The climb involves 273 steps and may not be suitable for individuals with mobility challenges, heart conditions, or vertigo. Floors can be uneven and slippery, so caution is advised. Children under 8 are prohibited for safety reasons and minors between the ages of 8 and 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Can I enter without a ticket?
No, access to the Leaning Tower of Pisa is ticketed. However, you can enter the Pisa Cathedral for free, provided you hold a ticket to at least one other attraction in the Monumental Complex.
Does buying tickets online cost more?
Yes, online tickets include a small booking fee. However, the convenience and guaranteed access make it well worth it, especially since walk-up inventory is limited and often unavailable after the morning rush. Plus, online bookings often allow you to bypass ticket queues, saving exploration time.
Can I upgrade my ticket after purchase?
If you decide to visit additional attractions beyond your current ticket, or want add-ons like a guide, you will need to purchase a separate ticket. Upgrading directly from one ticket type to another is not possible.
What happens if I miss my time slot?
Tickets are strictly time-bound. If you miss your time slot, you will not be allowed entry, and refunds are not provided. Consider arriving at least 15 minutes early to ensure timely access.
Can I book tickets a month in advance?
Absolutely! In fact, we recommend it. Tickets usually become available up to 60 days in advance, and popular time slots sell out quickly, especially during spring and summer holidays. Booking early means you’ll get your preferred date and time, plus peace of mind.
Do I need to pre-book tickets even during off-season visits?
While the demand may be lower during off-season periods, tickets are still limited due to daily quotas. Booking in advance is always recommended to secure your preferred time slot.
Are combo tickets worth it?
Combo tickets provide excellent value for those exploring beyond the Leaning Tower. For example, a ticket combining the Baptistery, the Pisa Camposanto, and the museums, in addition to the tower and the Cathedral costs less than purchasing individual entries for each attraction.
Why should I book a guided tour?
Guided tours enhance your visit by offering in-depth insights into the history, architecture, and significance of the Leaning Tower and its surroundings. Guides are available in multiple languages, including English, Italian, Spanish, and German, to cater to diverse audiences.
Can I upgrade my ticket after purchase?

Are there any kid-friendly ways to explore the tower?
Yes! Older kids, aged 8 and above, will love the climb and the incredible views from the top. For younger children, the Piazza dei Miracoli offers plenty to explore, from the Baptistry’s acoustics to wide-open green spaces perfect for an unwinding experience.
Can I bring my pets or service animals to the tower?
While pets are not allowed, guide dogs/service animals with the proper certification are welcome to assist you.
For a family with children or teenagers, it’s truly ideal and very convenient to be able to visit every site with a single ticket and without time restrictions—except for the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but this is completely understandable given the large number of tourists and the limited space at this wonderful monument. You can take breaks for restroom stops, snacks, or simply to relax between visits.

Easy entrance, very fun experience! One that everyone should do. I am very claustrophobic and I don't like heights! But I did it!!! Well worth the money.

Booking with Headout was so easy and everything was clearly explained and communicated. Having received the digital tickets made access to the tower, lockers, toilets and cathedral convenient and easy.

The site is brilliant and the organization exceptional. All you need is your e-ticket to access the well-maintained toilets and even the handbag lockers. Bravo, an example for many other tourist sites.

Easy access and quick entry to the tower. The climb is definitely worth it.
Unfortunately, the cathedral was closed that day.
