Pisa Camposanto in a nutshell

Pisa Camposanto cemetery with ancient frescoes and marble sculptures in Pisa, Italy.

Year opened: Construction of Camposanto began in 1277 and continued for over a century. It was officially consecrated in 1464, although parts of the structure were completed earlier.

Founder: Commissioned by Archbishop Federico Visconti and built by architect Giovanni di Simone, it was built with the purpose of serving as a burial ground for the city’s elites. The Camposanto’s foundations were laid with the sacred soil reportedly brought back from Golgotha by Archbishop Ubaldo de' Lanfranchi during the Crusades, giving it its name, meaning “holy field.”

Must-see highlights: Camposanto is home to some of the most emotionally powerful art in Pisa. Chief among them is The Triumph of Death, a 14th-century fresco attributed to Buonamico Buffalmacco, known for its vivid portrayal of mortality and salvation.

Current use: Although originally constructed as a monumental cemetery, Camposanto no longer serves a burial function. Today, it is both a sacred space and a site of cultural heritage preservation.

Unique facts: According to legend, bodies buried in this soil would decompose within 24 hours. It is the final resting place of several prominent Pisans, including mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci.

What to see inside

Cloister architecture & courtyard

Step into Camposanto’s white marble cloisters and Gothic arches, where sunlight shifts gently across 150-year-old columns, creating a tranquil, meditative space that prepares you for the sacred setting ahead.

Pisa Camposanto tombs with ancient sculptures and intricate carvings in Italy.

Roman sarcophagi & medieval tombs

Roman sarcophagi line the walkways, their carvings blending mythology and Christianity. Repurposed for Pisa’s elite, these richly detailed tombs reflect centuries of evolving spiritual identity and civic memory.

Frescoes of Pisa Camposanto

Fresco galleries

Frescoes like The Triumph of Death and Old Testament Stories span Camposanto’s walls, their vivid pigments and restored details offering deep insight into medieval beliefs, artistry, and resilience after WWII.

Aulla Chapel

Nestled within the cloisters, the 16th-century Aulla Chapel features a painted wooden ceiling and 18th-century crucifix. Still active for prayer, it offers a rare moment of intimacy and spiritual pause.

The Ammanati Cenotaph

The Ammanati Cenotaph stands out with classical elegance and symbolic detail. Dedicated to jurist Ligo Ammannati, it honors legal wisdom and humanist ideals that shaped Pisa’s medieval civic identity.

Architectural highlights

Gothic harmony in marble

Begun in 1278 by Giovanni di Simone, Camposanto was designed as a cloistered cemetery in the Pisan Gothic style. The structure wraps around a rectangular courtyard, featuring a harmonious sequence of pointed arches supported by slender marble columns, creating a luminous and meditative space.

Sacred geometry and light

The architectural rhythm of the cloisters—with 43 blind arches on the exterior and 62 open arcades facing the inner courtyard—was crafted to invite natural light into the corridors. This play of shadow and illumination amplifies the solemnity of the tombs and frescoes within.

Reused classical elements

Many of the tombs and wall bases are made from reclaimed Roman marble, including richly carved sarcophagi dating as far back as the 3rd century CE. These classical relics were repurposed to connect Pisa’s medieval identity with the grandeur of ancient Rome.

The war-torn roof and fresco rescue

Camposanto’s wooden roof was destroyed during an Allied bombing in 1944. While many frescoes were severely damaged, restoration efforts have since revived masterpieces like The Triumph of Death using sinopiae (original sketches) and experimental conservation methods—making the site a symbol of cultural recovery.

Historical and cultural significance of Camposanto

Camposanto played a pivotal role in Pisa’s religious, intellectual, and artistic history, complementing the Cathedral and Leaning Tower to complete the city’s sacred trilogy. A hub for Renaissance humanists, it nurtured theological and classical study through its tombs and frescoes. Artists here advanced early Renaissance techniques that influenced masters like Michelangelo. Its blend of pagan Roman sarcophagi and Christian iconography reflects Pisa’s layered identity. As the final piece of the Square of Miracles, Camposanto enriches the cultural context of the iconic Leaning Tower.

For a family with children or teenagers, it’s truly ideal and very convenient to be able to visit every site with a single ticket and without time restrictions—except for the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but this is completely understandable given the large number of tourists and the limited space at this wonderful monument. You can take breaks for restroom stops, snacks, or simply to relax between visits.
