Top of the Rock: A breathtaking NYC experience with sky-high views

Perched atop the historic Rockefeller Center, the Top of the Rock observation deck offers unrivaled views of the city's skyline, showcasing landmarks like the Empire State Building and Central Park. Beyond its breathtaking vistas, it holds significant historical importance as part of the iconic Rockefeller Center. Stay on this page to discover ticket options, essential information, and tips to make your experience at Top of the Rock truly fulfilling!

Things to know before booking your tickets

  1. Visit during off-season: Since Top of the Rock is a popular tourist attraction in New York City, expect large crowds and long queues during peak season which falls in the summer months of July and August. The best way to have a pleasurable experience at the observation deck is to book your tickets on weekdays between early April and early June, or between September and November.
  2. How to enter: Top of the Rock is located within 30 Rockefeller Plaza. It has only one entrance that can be accessed from 50th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Look for the big red carpet outside the main doors marking the entrance. Once inside the building, you can take the elevator to the observation deck on the 70th floor.
  3. Be prepared for queues: There are security checks at the entrance of the building. Apart from that, there is only one lift to the Top of the Rock observation deck. Both of these will add up to a wait time of around 30 minutes. Choose the VIP Pass for priority access to the elevators.
  4. Make sure to get on The Beam: Don’t miss out on the thrilling The Beam experience! It lets you relive an iconic 1932 picture of 11 ironworkers lunching on a steel beam during the construction of 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The experience is included in the VIP pass.
  5. Catch the sunset: Book an evening slot at Top of the Rock to catch a magnificent New York sunset against the busy cityscape. Remember to carry a light sweater or jacket to escape the chilly evening breeze on top of the outdoor observation deck. The temperature can go as low as 18°C even during a summer evening.
  6. Check the weather forecast: Since there’s an outdoor observation deck at Top of the Rock, make sure to check the weather forecast for the day before heading over or booking your tickets. If it’s cloudy, book your tickets for another day to be able to get the best views of New York.
  7. There will be crowds: The observation deck is one of the more sought after ones in New York and can be extremely crowded. If you’re claustrophobic or don’t like crowds, Top of the Rock might not be the best experience for you. The elevators are mostly always crowded and the attraction itself gets a larger footfall throughout the year.
  8. Access to restrooms: The only toilets available at the venue are on the 66th floor. You can access them only after heading to the observation deck and taking another lift down to the 66th floor.
  9. Children and elderly might not enjoy it as much: If you have young children with you, skip this experience since the crowds, wait time and restroom access might not be very convenient for them. Elderly people will find all the standing involved difficult.

An incredible experience in New York. It offers spectacular views of the entire city, especially at sunset. The mirrored surfaces make everything look even more impressive and unlike any other observation deck. I loved how they combine art and technology; it’s definitely not just about going up to see the view—it’s a fully interactive experience. I recommend allowing enough time to enjoy each room and take plenty of photos. It can get quite crowded, so it’s best to book in advance. But it’s absolutely worth it—one of the best attractions in New York. An incredible experience in New York. It offers spectacular views of the entire city, especially at sunset. The ferry ride and self guided tours of the SOL and Ellis Island were fun. Disappointed that the ticket did not include the pedestal. I thought when I read before booking included the pedestal. The Edge was great yet windy and cold.
