Things to know before booking your Empire State Building tickets

  • Two levels: The Empire State Building has two observation decks: the 86th and 102nd floors. The 86th-floor deck, which is open-air, is included with a general admission ticket. To visit both floors, you’ll need to upgrade your ticket for access to the 102nd floor at an additional cost.
  • The views: The 86th-floor deck offers sweeping skyline views, and you can spot many famous landmarks. However, some barricades might obstruct your view if you’re trying to capture panoramic photos or videos. The 102nd floor, though smaller, has floor-to-ceiling glass windows that offer a clearer, unobstructed view from a higher vantage point.
  • What’s included: All tickets provide access to the exhibits and galleries on the 2nd floor as well as the famous Art Deco Lobby.
  • Visiting during peak hours: Wait times during peak hours can range from 30 minutes to an hour. To avoid waiting in line, choose skip the line tickets. Keep in mind that while these tickets allow you to bypass the ticket queue, you’ll still need to go through security screening.
  • Sunrise vs. sunset: Sunset is a popular time at the Empire State Building, so expect large crowds. To enjoy the sunset with fewer people around, we suggest booking tickets to the 102nd floor. Alternatively, you can choose the VIP Sunrise Experience which comes with breakfast, coffee, and other delights.

Frequently asked questions about Empire State Building tickets

What is included in the general admission ticket?

General admission tickets give you access to the 86th-floor observatory, the Art Deco Lobby, and all the exhibits inside the building.

Do I need separate tickets for the 102nd floor?

Yes, to visit the 102nd floor you have to purchase separate tickets or upgrade your general admission ticket.

Is going to the 102nd floor worth it?

The 102nd floor offers a quieter, less crowded experience. Additionally, the floor-to-ceiling glass windows offer an incredible view from a higher vantage point, making the upgrade worth it!

Is the VIP Sunrise Experience a private tour?

No, the VIP Sunrise Experience with Starbucks Reserve® is not a private tour, but it has limited capacity. Since it starts at 6:30 am, you can expect a quieter, more relaxing experience with stunning views and a delicious breakfast.

Which level is more crowded?

The 86th floor is the main observation deck and tends to be more crowded, especially during peak hours. Avoid visiting during peak hours for a more peaceful experience.

How do I get access to the 103rd floor?

The 103rd floor is not open to the general public.

What is the height difference between the two levels?

The 86th floor is about 1,050 feet above ground, while the indoor deck on the 102nd floor is approximately 1,250 feet high.

Do I need skip-the-line tickets?

Although guests are only allowed to enter based on their time slot, it would help to bypass ticket lines and get priority access to the observation decks. Skip-the-line tickets are especially useful during peak hours and holidays.

What if I miss my entry time?

If you are late, you will be accommodated based on capacity or may be asked to wait for the next slot.

An incredible experience in New York. It offers spectacular views of the entire city, especially at sunset. The mirrored surfaces make everything look even more impressive and unlike any other observation deck. I loved how they combine art and technology; it’s definitely not just about going up to see the view—it’s a fully interactive experience. I recommend allowing enough time to enjoy each room and take plenty of photos. It can get quite crowded, so it’s best to book in advance. But it’s absolutely worth it—one of the best attractions in New York. An incredible experience in New York. It offers spectacular views of the entire city, especially at sunset. I booked tickets directly on the Headout app, which in itself was extremely easy, once at the venue I went to the front desk and they scanned our tickets with no issues at all. The museum itself wasn't my cup of tea I enjoyed some aspects of it but I probably wouldn't reccomed the natural history museum to others. The Headout app however I would recommended for sure! I have a few more ticketed events I've booked through Headout still to do whilst we are in New York for the next week!
