Plan your Christmas in London

London in winter is a mix of cozy charm and brisk breezes. With the festive spirit in the air, it's a delightful time to embrace the city's cold weather, so grab your warm coat and let's check out the details!

  • Weather in November:

November kicks off winter with cool temperatures, averaging highs of 10-12°C (50-54°F) and lows around 5-6°C (41-43°F). It's also one of the wettest months, with rain falling on about 16-17 days. Don't forget your umbrella!

  • Weather in December:

December brings even cooler temperatures, with highs around 8-10°C (46-50°F) and chilly lows of 2-4°C (36-39°F). Rainfall remains significant, averaging about 50 mm, and while snow is rare, the festive decorations make up for it!

  • Weather in January:

January is the coldest month, with highs around 7°C (45°F) and lows of about 2°C (36°F). Expect similar rainfall in December! The short daylight hours mean cozy evenings come early, perfect for enjoying hot drinks.

Plan your Christmas in London

Heads up: There's no public transport on Christmas Day! This means no Tube, buses, trams, river buses, cable cars, or National Rail services.

But don't worry! Here are some other transportation options:

  • Taxis and Rideshares: Taxis and services like Uber will be running, but expect higher fares and possible delays since they'll be busier than usual.
  • Electric Scooters: Some areas in London might have electric scooter rentals available, so check your borough's rules for the day.
  • Santander Cycles: You can still hire a bike anytime, including Christmas Day! Just look for docking stations scattered around the city.

Here's a handy list of must-have items to keep you comfy and ready for holiday adventures:

  • Warm layers: Kick things off with thermal undergarments and long-sleeve shirts, then pile on cozy sweaters. With temperatures hanging between 2°C and 10°C (36°F to 50°F), a snug, waterproof coat is a must to keep you toasty and dry!
  • Comfy footwear: Go for waterproof boots or shoes with a solid grip! Keeping your feet cozy and secure is critical, especially on those wet London streets. Your feet will thank you!
  • Must-have accessories: Don't skip out on a warm hat, gloves, and a cozy scarf! Not only do they keep the chill at bay, but they also jazz up your outfit with a dash of style.
  • Skincare: Winter can be tough on your skin, so remember to bring along some hydrating skincare goodies! Moisturizers and lip balms will be your saviors, keeping your skin and lips happy and smooth all season long.
  • Rain protection: London weather loves to keep you on your toes, so a sturdy, compact umbrella is your best friend! It'll save you from surprise showers and keep you dry while you're out and about.
  • Device charger: Since the days are shorter, a portable charger is a game-changer for your devices! It ensures you can snap all those festive photos without worrying about your battery dying.
Christmas in London
  • Pre-book, pre-book, and pre-book: Popular spots like the London Eye and festive events can sell out faster than you can say "Merry Christmas." So, snag those tickets at least two weeks in advance to guarantee your place in the holiday fun!
  • Plan for shorter days: With shorter days in winter, it's smart to plan your sightseeing a bit! Try to hit those outdoor spots earlier to make the most of the daylight.
  • Go for gift shopping: Make sure to check out the must-visit spots like Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park and the Christmas market at Southbank Centre! They're packed with tasty treats, festive drinks, and one-of-a-kind gifts.
  • Click pictures with Christmas lights: Join a walking or bus tour to soak in London's dazzling Christmas lights on Oxford Street, Regent Street, and Covent Garden! The displays are absolutely stunning, like stepping into a holiday postcard.
  • Attend a carol concert: Feel the holiday magic by catching a carol concert at iconic spots like St. Paul's Cathedral or Westminster Abbey.
