The British Museum | Visit the world's first national public museum

Founded in 1753, the British Museum was the very first national public museum in the world, open to everyone. With over 8 million objects from all over the world and throughout history, going back over two million years, the museum is one of the largest and most comprehensive collections in existence. You might even recognize something famous, like the Rosetta Stone!

Things to know before you book British Museum tickets

  • Ticket options: You can book entry tickets, tickets to the Picasso Printmaker exhibition, a priority entry ticket with an audioguide, Afternoon Tea at the museum, and a small-group guided tour. While entry to the museum is free, you still need to reserve a spot to enter the museum.
  • What’s included: The British Museum tickets include entry to the museum, entry to most of the exhibitions, access to the shops and restaurants inside, and access to the Reading Room, the library, and the study rooms. Some temporary exhibitions require paid ticketed entry, so you will need to book these separately. You can also upgrade your tickets to include priority access with an audio guide in English, Italian, French, German, and Spanish, or a 2-hour English-guided tour for 20 guests.
  • Combo tours: If you want to make a whole day out of it, you can book a combo ticket that includes entry to the London Eye or the Tower of London and the Crown Jewels, in addition to your British Museum visit.
  • Visiting during peak hours: Since the British Museum is a popular attraction and has free entry, wait times during peak hours can range from 30 minutes to an hour. To avoid waiting in line, choose skip-the-line tickets. Keep in mind that while these tickets allow you to bypass the ticket queue, you’ll still need to go through security screening.
  • Guided tours: The small-group guided tour and the audio tour with priority entry include skip-the-line access to maximize your time at the museum. The multilingual audio guide offers flexibility, while the guided tour provides in-depth knowledge.
  • Discounted tickets: Children under 15 can avail of discounted prices on the guided tour. Infants under 3 can enter the museum for free on a tour.
  • Cancellation policy: Your entry tickets can be canceled anytime before you enter and guided tours can be canceled 24 hours before the experience. However, the skip-the-line entry tickets with an audio guide and the Afternoon Tea tickets cannot be canceled or rescheduled.

Reading Room

It was built in the 1800s, with 4.8 km of bookcases and 40 km of shelves, inspired by Rome’s Pantheon. Only the likes of Karl Marx, Lenin, and novelists like Bram Stoker and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, were lucky enough to be allowed in. Today, it houses the archive for students and history buffs.

Library and archive

The library has over 300,000 volumes on everything from ancient cultures to current global movements. The collection is divided into sections for Africa, Asia, and Europe, and one for coins and medals. They also have a massive archive filled with the museum's own history since 1753.

british museum tickets

Study rooms

Each department, from Africa to Asia, has a research room where you can get up close and personal with the collection (with an appointment, of course). Dig into regions like Oceania, Europe, Greece, and the Middle East, or dive into topics like horology, money, medals, or prints and drawings.

Note: The British Museum has some amazing artifacts, but there's a debate about where some of them belong and how they were acquired since many of these ways are no longer acceptable. Countries continue to request the return of objects taken a long time ago, especially under conflict and colonial activity.

Visitor tips for the British Museum

  • While entry to the British Museum is free, it is recommended that you pre-book your tickets to skip the long ticketing queues.
  • Pick up a map of the British Museum from the Great Court or download the British Museum app before your visit. This will allow you to visit only the parts that you are interested in and save time.
  • The queues at the toilets tend to be very long so try to use the facilities elsewhere before you enter the museum.
  • If it's your first visit, head straight to the Rosetta Stone (Room 4), the Elgin Marbles (Room 18), and the Egyptian mummies (Room 62) early in your visit when energy levels are high. These are the most crowded areas later in the day. Rooms like the Islamic World (Room 42) or Africa (Room 25) are less crowded and offer rich insights into global history. They're a refreshing break from the busier exhibits.
  • Midweek afternoons are generally quieter. Avoid weekends and school holidays when families and tourists dominate the space. The museum stays open late on Fridays, and the atmosphere is more relaxed. It's a great time to explore without the usual bustle.
  • The museum’s main entrance on Great Russell Street gets packed. Instead, use the Montague Place entrance, which is often less busy. Also, skip the crowded central lifts by using the staircases near the ends of the building.
  • Do not skip the temporary exhibits. Some of the most engaging displays are part of rotating exhibitions that are less crowded but packed with treasures you might not see again!
  • Knowledgeable museum volunteers are stationed throughout the building and love sharing lesser-known stories about the artifacts. They can point out details you might otherwise miss.

I was truly surprised by the London Eye experience—a magnificent, breathtaking view in complete safety. And what can I say about the Sky Garden? It’s an absolute must-see with a splendid view; the combination of the garden and the height feels almost unreal. Thank you for these wonderful moments.
