  • With superhits like Proud Mary, River Deep Mountain High, and Nutbush City Limits, Tina Turner became a bonafide icon in 1960, selling out tickets for performances in stadiums and arenas around the world.
  • The premiere of Tina - The Tina Turner Musical began previews at the Aldwych Theatre in March 2018 and was attended by Tina Turner herself who gave the show her stamp of approval. Turner has also served as one of the producers of this beloved musical.

Directed by Phyllida Lloyd, the mastermind behind Mamma Mia!, TINA: The Tina Turner Musical was written by Katori Hall with Frank Ketelaar and Kess Prins. The show features brilliant choreography by Anthony van Laast with set and costume design by Mark Thompson. Aisha Jawando stars as Tina Turner joined by Jammy Kasongo playing her partner Ike.

TINA: The Tina Turner Musical has had a large amount of involvement from Tina Turner herself, who recently proclaimed that working on the musical helped bring her out of retirement. Made with her blessing, the musical features many of her best songs. If you’re familiar with the book written by Katori Hall or a fan of Tina Turner’s music in general, this show is tailor-made for you.

Storyline

The musical is a deep dive into the triumphant and troubling life of Tina Turner, right from her humble beginnings in Nutbush, Tennessee, to her tumultuous relationship with Ike Turner and her iconic comeback in her 40s. The musical follows Tina’s journey to becoming a superstar coupled with her experience with marital abuse and eventual divorce from her long-time partner and husband Ike Turner. The musical beautifully showcases her knack for overcoming obstacles, a talent that came in handy to help her become a solo rock 'n’ roll star.

Built in 1905, Aldwych Theatre was constructed as a pair of the Novello Theatre by designer W. G. R. Sprague. Despite being constructed together and designed by the same architect, the two theatres were funded and managed by different entities. The theatre has hosted numerous musical comedies in its early years, including the production Blue Bell, which starred Mr. Hicks.

Featuring an Edwardian Baroque style, the Aldwych Theatre is a visual delight. The theatre became renowned for the quality of the shows produced, particularly the series of comedies that played at the theatre starting in 1925.
