How to pick the right Great Barrier Reef cruise?

Although you can try a variety of underwater activities to explore reef systems from any of the 3 locations mentioned above, the location you pick for your cruise will depend on the kind of experience you’d like.

  • Port Douglas cruises are especially popular for snorkeling as several reefs are located close to the surface. Green Island lets you escape the city noise with its soothing rainforest environment far from large crowds. Fitzroy Island offers a variety of activities both on and off the island, offering the best of both worlds.
  • Pricing for different Great Barrier Reef cruises:
    - Half-day cruises: from AU$95 to AU$105 | Full-day cruises: from AU$138 to AU$449
    - Port Douglas cruises: AU$398 | Green Island cruises: from AU$105 to AU$376 | Fitzroy Island cruises: from AU$95 to AU$177
    - Snorkel equipment/glass-bottom boat: from AU$105 to AU$249 | Scuba diving (intro/guided): from AU$265 to AU$434 | Helicopter flight: from AU$369 to AU$449
    - Standard cruises: from AU$105 to AU$249 (cruise + 1 reef activity) | Premium cruises: from AU$265 to AU$449 (small group/marine biologist/2 reef activities/helicopter ride)
  • Along with tea, coffee and snacks, an expert guide is included in every Great Barrier Reef cruise. One reef exploration activity will be included in the itinerary, where you can explore  the reefs on your own by borrowing the snorkeling equipment or take a glass-bottom boat tour. However, if you want to take only transfers to either Green Island or Fitzroy Island, the reef activity will be available as an upgradable option. The snorkeling equipment will always be provided by your cruise operator.
  • Your one reef exploration activity can be further upgraded to a guided snorkel tour, the price for which can go up to AU$249. You also have the option of picking a scuba diving demonstration if you’re an experienced diver, for which prices can go up to AU$329. If you’re a beginner, you can take a guided or certified dive, the prices for which go up to AU$398.
  • Some other activities you can explore are helmet dives, where you walk on the ocean floor with an air bubble and helicopter flights, for when you’d like a scenic flight on your way back. You can also add a 2nd reef exploration activity or get a marine biologist to be your tour guide for an additional fee.
  • While some full-day tours include a delicious Australian meal, some offer afternoon lunch as an optional upgrade. Some tours also allow you to pick premium meal options that include a smorgasbord lunch, seafood platters and more.

What your Great Barrier Reef cruise looks like

Great Barrier Reef Cruises

Boarding

The boarding of your cruise usually begins 15-30 minutes before the scheduled departure. We suggest that you arrive at least 15 minutes early to settle down before departing. This is also when your captain will share safety information for your voyage.

Great Barrier Reef Cruises

Cruise

Depending on what reef is included in your itinerary, your cruise to the first reef location will take 20 to 40 minutes. Enjoy the journey as you look back at the receding land and expanding ocean. Some cruises also use this time to give you a snorkeling demo.

Great Barrier Reef Cruises

Island or first reef location

Once you’ve reached the first location, you will disembark either at Green or Fitzroy Islands or onto a pontoon. If you’re aboard a luxury cruiser, chances are that you won’t have a stopover before the first reef location. You can put on your snorkeling or diving equipment on the boat and enter the ocean directly.

Great Barrier Reef Cruises

Refreshments

After your first activity, you will either be served tea and coffee with some snacks or you can enjoy a delicious Australian meal, depending on what’s included in your itinerary. You can even get a glass of wine or champagne to go with your food.

Great Barrier Reef Cruises

Second reef location

After you’ve gotten something to eat, you can prepare for the next activity on your itinerary. This usually includes traveling to a second reef location and taking another snorkel or dive. You can also instead take a glass-bottom boat tour or an underwater helmet walk.

Great Barrier Reef Cruises

Other experiences - on pontoon

A pontoon is a large flat or hollow boat that acts as an off-shore disembarking point, but its size also means you can explore a variety of unique experiences. Get access to an exclusive underwater observatory or head to the water slide on the top deck for some splashy fun.

Great Barrier Reef Cruises

Other experiences - on island

If you’re on one of the islands, you can spend the rest of your time exploring the islands. Explore the lush rainforests of Green Island on a boardwalk. Discover the Fitzroy Island National Park on a self-guided tour, take a semi-submersible tour or simply laze around on the beach until departure.

Great Barrier Reef sunset cruise with vibrant sky and ocean views.

Sail or flight back

Once you’ve completed all your activities, you will sail back to Cairns or Port Douglas. Some cruises offer a complimentary glass of wine for you to sip on your journey back. Or, if you want to make the most of your Great Barrier Reef experience, a scenic helicopter ride back is the perfect end to your day.

Great Barrier Reef Cruises

Warmer months from November to April is the peak tourist season for Great Barrier Reef cruises. However, the best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef for you will depend on the activities you’d like to explore.

Water activities are popular in the summer (Dec to Feb), but this is also the peak tourist season, so expect large crowds. The summer also brings showers, so visibility under the surface is not its best. If you want several water activities or the best views of the reef, May to Jun and Sep to Oct (off-peak seasons) is your best bet as the water is still warm for prolonged underwater activities and visibility is also at its peak.

If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, turtle nesting period is in Nov to Dec, but if you’d rather watch little turtles hatch and crawl to the ocean, come in Jan to March. June and July is when you can spot dwarf minke whales and humpback whales can be spotted through July to October.

Great Barrier Reef Cruises
  • Test the waters: The best way to experience the Great Barrier Reef is to get into the waters. If not diving, consider snorkeling. Many cruises also provide floatation devices.
  • Carry sun protection: It’s easy to get sunburnt at the Great Barrier Reefs. However, reef-friendly sunscreen is essential! Otherwise, pack the usual hat and shades.
  • Carry medication: If you’re prone to getting seasick, carry the  medication you need to avoid feeling nauseous.
  • Get a doc’s approval for dives: Especially if you suffer with ear pain on flights or have asthma or claustrophobia.
  • Opt for smaller operators: Big international cruises that pass by Queensland’s coast may not include opportunities to get into the water. Many smaller cruise operators include immersive experiences and even take you to lesser visited areas.
Great Barrier Reef Cruises
  • Avoid scuba diving right after a flight: The drastic altitude changes could lead to altitude sickness. It’s recommended to have a 24-hour gap between the two activities.
  • Follow your trainer to the tee: Your guide is experienced in reading the subtle changes in the wind and weather. Heed to their instructions to ensure your safety in the ocean.
  • Don’t touch marine life: Avoid touching the fish or reefs while snorkeling or diving, even unintentionally.
  • Avoid feeding: Fish feeding is only recommended as a guided activity.
  • Smoking is prohibited: This is not just to protect other passengers but also marine life.
  • Alcohol is a strict no-no: Entering the ocean while being under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited. It’s easy to get swept away by currents if you’re not alert.

Frequently asked questions about Great Barrier Reef cruises

What are my Great Barrier Reef cruise options?

Great Barrier Reef cruises are available as either half-day or full-day tours with at least 1 reef exploration activity included. You can add an additional underwater activity, an Australian lunch or some premium options like small group tours, helicopter tours or marine biologist for additional prices.

What Great Barrier Reef cruise can I take if I’m on a budget?

Half-day cruises usually begin from AU$95 while some full-day cruises with one reef activity are available for AU$105.

What is included in an all-inclusive Great Barrier Reef cruise?

An all-inclusive cruise would usually be a full-day tour with at least 1-2 reef exploration activities that can be upgraded to guided snorkeling tours or certified dives. An afternoon lunch is also included along with some extra time for you to explore Green Island, Fitzroy Island or the off-shore pontoon.

Can I cancel my booking if plans change?

All Great Barrier Reef tours offer a full refund if you cancel your tickets up to 24 hours before the start of your experience.

Do I need sunscreen while visiting the Great Barrier Reef?

While it’s easy to get sunburned out here, if you want to wear sunscreen, it is essential that it is also a reef-friendly sunscreen to protect marine life. However, if you can’t get an environment-friendly sunscreen, we suggest you at least carry a hat and sunglasses.

Can I eat before snorkeling or diving?

It is not recommended that you snorkel or scuba dive with an empty stomach as you may feel drained quite easily. However, opt for a light meal of fresh fruits, sandwiches or salads that can be easily digested. Avoid heavy greasy food to avoid feeling nauseous.

What is the age limit for snorkeling and scuba diving?

Typically, snorkeling is available for all ages, while diving may have a minimum age requirement, often 12 or older.

Are there weight restrictions for activities?

Helicopter rides usually have a maximum weight of 130kg. Anyone above this weight may need to pay additional surcharges to take the flight or may not be able to participate. Scuba diving has no weight restrictions as such but you may need to be physically fit to handle the activity’s demands.

Are there medical restrictions for diving?

Yes, medical restrictions apply. Guests with conditions such as asthma, epilepsy, or heart conditions may be restricted. A medical check may be needed for guests over a certain weight. We suggest that you get your physician’s approval to remain on the safe side.

How accessible are underwater activities?

Snorkeling can be accessible to all, and some cruises offer tailored support for guests with mobility needs. Scuba diving accessibility may vary and you may need to check with your provider.

Can I bring my camera for underwater photography?

Waterproof cameras are allowed, and some cruises even offer underwater camera rentals.

Can children participate in snorkeling or diving?

Yes, snorkeling is generally child-friendly, while diving has age restrictions and may require adult supervision for minors.

How deep will I go while scuba diving?

Introductory dives usually reach around 12 meters (40 feet), while certified divers can explore deeper sites.

Really great day with our 11 and 13 yo. Food on board the big cat was nice. Activities- we did snorkeling and the kids loved it. We saw so many fish and turtles the kids were in the water all day except to come out for lunch. Ice cream on board and bar was lovely finishing touch. Highly recommended.
