The Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia, commonly known as the Barcelona Cathedral, is a remarkable architectural and religious monument in the capital city of Catalonia. Constructed from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries, the cathedral is known for its magnificent gothic style of architecture. The Barcelona Cathedral is where his holiness, the Archbishop of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain sits.

Why visit Barcelona Cathedral?

Barcelona Cathedral
  • The Chapel of the Holy Christ of Lepanto houses a figure believed to have miraculously dodged a cannonball during the 1571 battle of Lepanto or protected the ship from sinking. A replica of the galley can be seen at the Maritime Museum.
  • Barcelona Cathedral also houses the stately Gothic and Baroque altarpieces, part of the Church of Saint Severas as well as the 140 statues of saints that call the cathedral home.
  • You can admire the wonder of the choir, the baptistery, and the tomb of Saint Eulalia.
  • There's an adjoining cloister that features a verdant tropical garden that is home to 13 white geese that represent the age Saint Eulalia (the saint the Barcelona Cathedral was built in honor of) is believed to have died.
  • Accessible from the Chapel of the Holy Innocents, the cathedral's flat roofs provide distinctive views of the Gothic Quarter, allowing one to appreciate the towers and the lantern tower's intricate details.

Barcelona Cathedral Highlights

Barcelona Cathedral floor and cloister

The Cathedral floor and cloister

Located right next to the Barcelona Cathedral and easily accessible from the cathedral floor, is the cloister. It was built much later than the cathedral, sometime in the 14th century, and is considered just as beautiful, if not more. It is loved for the charming courtyard with tall palm trees; a refreshing change of scenery in the Gothic Quarter. Here, you also get to see the 13 geese bathing in the Well of the Geese. The geese are believed to represent the age at which Saint Eulalia was martyred. It is also one of the only places to host Barcelona's most striking tradition of 'Ou com Balla' or dancing egg.

Barcelona Cathedral choir

The choir

One of the most magnificent sights and significant sculpture works inside Barcelona Cathedral is that of the choir or choir seats that date back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Built in the Catalan Gothic style, its canopies and pinnacles were made by the sculptor Michael Lochner and his disciple Johan Friedrich at the end of the 15th century. Having preserved its charm as is, on these seats you see the details such as the coats-of-arms of the knights of the Order of the Golden Fleece which were painted on the backs of all the choir seats.

Barcelona Cathedral Museum

The Museum

Gothic Barcelona Cathedral has a small museum too, that is located under the gallery of the cloister next to the chapel dedicated to Saint Lucia. The museum does not have too many artefacts on display. However, the few works here are considered to be of great importance, like the works of Spanish gothic painter Bartolomé Bermejo. You will also find the terracotta sculpture of Saint Eulalia by Anthony Claperós, and paintings of Saint Bernardino and the Guardian Angel. Another significant piece is the monstrance, from the late-14th century, made up from the campaign throne of King Martin the Humane.

Barcelona Cathedral Chapel of Lepanto

Chapel of Lepanto

The Chapel of Lepanto was built as a small chapterhouse or place to hold meetings. It is considered special because it holds an unusual crucifix known as the Holy Christ of Lepanto. The crucifix is famous for its slanted shape, which according to legend occurred when it was aboard a royal ship under the attack of a cannonball fire. It is believed that the crucifix miraculously leaned to the side on its own to avoid the fire and has stayed slanted that way since. Another story says the cross was in the ship and was moved to cover a large hole that would've sunk the ship.

Barcelona Cathedral Highlights- Rooftop

Rooftops

To enjoy spectacular views of the city of Barcelona take the elevator up to the rooftops from the Barcelona Cathedral. It can be accessed through the chapel of Innocent Saints. This is an especially good idea if you're on a time-crunch, you'll only have to pay a small fee to use the lift. Once here, you get to take in the views of central Barcelona and some of the well-known parts of the city like the two bell towers, the two lateral pinnacles, the cimborio crowned by the Holy Cross, the cloister and just a beautiful panoramic view of Barcelona.

Really nice museum with amazing paintings Too bad its a bit too small for what I was expecting. Luckly I got a great discount on the tickets as I dont think its worth the full price for its size

From the start, the information was clear and everything was very quick and accessible. I will definitely use Headout for future events :)

The audio guides are interesting. I couldn't find the park entrance at the Park Güell stop. I didn't lose my paper ticket, but it could also be available on my phone. What if something unexpected happens? The hours could be extended into the evening. The audio description doesn't always match the location.

The mobile app was very useful and informative. The Barcelona hop-on hop-off tour was very sensible, and we couldn't have seen everything in one day on our own. Thanks to this tour, we got a complete tour of Barcelona. We did the full tour and then got off at the stops we liked. You can get off at any stop you want and then get back on the bus. Getting around the city on your own might end up costing you more in tickets, so this tour makes more sense. I'm attaching some photos of the beautiful sights we captured from the bus :)

Beautiful Cathedral well highlighted by our guide. The history was well explored and explained by our guide . We would never have known about the 13 geese without the guide. She also talked about the festival of Sant Elulia too which brought the exhibits to life.
